The All-American Football Foundation's 50th Annual Banquet of Champions will honor University of Maryland head football coach Ralph Friedgen as well as the Washington Redskins' head coach Steve Spurrier and former Nebraska mentor Tom Osbourne on April 8th. The event will take place at the J.W. Marriott in Washington, D.C., and will also name Senator Robert Dole as the Admiral Thomas J. Hamilton honoree.
Friedgen, Spurrier and Osbourne will be named the recipients of the foundation's Johnny Vaught Head Coach Award while seven members of the Terrapin staff will also be honored with the Mike Campbell Award which recognizes the top assistant coaches in the country. South Carolina assistant John Guetekunst will also be recognized.
The Terrapin coaching staffers attending will be offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe, defensive coordinator Gary Blackney, defensive line coach Dave Sollazzo, wide receivers coach/recruiting coordinator James Franklin, offensive line coach Tom Brattan, outside linebackers coach Al Seamonson and tight ends/special teams coach Ray Rychleski.
Other people being honored at the banquet include: former Terp E.J. Henderson and Penn State's Larry Johnson (Col. Earl "Red" Blaik Leadership Scholarship); Al Cartwright (Jim Murray Outstanding Sportswriter); Ralph Guglielmi and Bob Williams (College Football Legends); Hallie Gregory (Gen. Robert R. Neyland Athletics Director honoree); Constancia Hayes (Outstanding Senior Women's Administrator honoree); Bill Bauersfield (All-American Football Fan); and ACC football officials Tommy Hunt and Bud Elliot (Outstanding Football Officials).
The University of Maryland and Penn State will be receiving $500 grants as a part of the scholarship earned by Henderson and Johnson.
