Undefeated Women's Lacrosse Team Takes On JMU At Byrd Saturday

April 4, 2003

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Marylnd women's lacrosse team returns home for the first time since March 15th this Saturday as it will play host to the 12th-ranked James Madison Dukes. Due to a track meet at Ludwig Field, the game will take place in Byrd Stadium at 1:00 p.m.

Maryland, the nation's top-ranked team, moved to 11-0 on Wednesday when it posted a come-from-behind, 13-10, victory at No. 6 Georgetown. The Terrapins overcame a three-goal halftime deficit to avenge last year's loss to the Hoyas and move their all-time record against GU to 11-1. In the win, senior goalie Cara Gorman came on in the second half for an injured Alexis Venechanos and posted 10 saves while allowing just two goals on 13 shots in the frame. Freshman Delia Cox led the way offensively as she beat her defender time after time, posting four unassisted goals on four shots.

James Madison comes to College Park sporting a 7-3 record after dropping a tough 12-11 decision to No. 4 Virginia on Wednesday. Two of the Dukes' three losses have come to top five teams (Loyola being the other) while its lone loss outside of the top five was to Old Dominion, a team Maryland beat 16-5 on March 22nd in Norfolk. Like Georgetown, JMU defeated Maryland a year ago (11-10 in Harrisonburg) while the Terps still hold a decisive edge in the series (36-3 all time).

The game will be broadcast by WMUC Sports and can be heard online by going to www.wmucsports.com.

TERPNOTES
++ Senior Sonia Judd took just one shot and had no assists at Georgetown, snapping the team's longest scoring streak. Prior to the game against the Hoyas, the Darlington, South Australia native had scored at least one point in 27 consecutive games.
++ Venechanos will not play against James Madison and the timetable for her return from the injury to her left knee is uncertain.
++ Head coach Cindy Timchal now needs just 11 wins to hit the 300 plateau for her career (includes games at Maryland and Northwestern). When she hits the mark, she will become the first coach in collegiate women's lacrosse to have done so. Her career record currently stands at 289-62 while her record in 13 years at Maryland stands at an amazing 213-22.
++ The Georgetown game marked just the second time this season that Maryland had allowed double digit goals to an opponent and the second time it had been outshot.
++ Though it posted a season-low in shots against the Hoyas, the Terrapins' shot efficiency was its best all season. The Terps took just 19 shots, converting 13, against GU for a .684 shooting percentage.
++ After having a two-game scoring drought at the ACC/ALC Challenge a week ago, freshman Delia Cox broke out in a big way against Georgetown. The Hingham, Mass. native scored four goals on four shots against the Hoyas including three in the second half. An ACC Freshman of the Year candidate, Cox entered this week leading the league in ground balls with an average of 3.3 per game.
