Game Notes From Maryland's 61-0 Win Over The Citadel

Sept. 13, 2003

Recap| Box Score| Quotes

  • Maryland's 61 points was the most since 1975, when the Terps defeated Virginia 62-14. The margin of victory was the largest since 1954 when Maryland won 74-13 over Missouri. The 61 points was the seventh-highest total in school history.

  • Maryland racked up 565 yards in total offense, the most since November 30, 2002, when the Terps rolled up 533 of offense against Wake Forest.

  • The Citadel was limited to 137 of total offense, the lowest total by a Terp opponent since Maryland held Notre Dame to 133 yards in the season opener last year.

  • On the first offensive play of the game, TB Josh Allen had a run that eclipsed several recent milestones for the Terps. For Allen, the 72-yard scamper was the longest of his career, surpassing his previous long of 70 (against West Virginia last season). It was the longest play of the season by a Terrapin and the team's longest rushing touchdown since Bruce Perry went 80 yards on the first play against Wake Forest in 2001 (Sept. 22).

  • Allen finished with a career-high 136 yards and one touchdown. His previous bests were against West Virginia a year ago (116 yards, 2 TDs). Backfield mate Sammy Maldonado also finished with a career-high 66 yards on 12 carries to go along with a game-high two touchdowns.

  • On the Terps' second drive, TB Sammy Maldonado came up with a first of his own as he scored his first TD as a Terp on a seven-yard scoring run. He added another rushing touchdown in the second quarter, making him the first Terp since Scott McBrien in the 2002 Peach Bowl to rush for two scores in a game.

  • Maryland's third possession never found the hands of the offense as WR/Specialist Steve Suter returned the Bulldog punt 75 yards for a touchdown. It was his first since last year's UNC game (11-02-02) and the fifth of his career, extending his Maryland record.

  • On the day, Suter finished with 75 punt return yards. His 880 career yards now stands just 19 yards shy of the total of 899 amassed by Bob Smith (1972-74), Maryland's career leader.

  • Maryland's 24-point first quarter was its most prolific quarter since last year's 28-point first quarter at West Virginia. The Terrapins' 37 first-half points were its most in a half since scoring 42 against Duke in the first half on October 20, 2001. Since 1980, Maryland had posted more than 40 points in a half just once (42 vs. Duke in 2001).

  • QB Scott McBrien had a solid night. Working only the first half, McBrien finished 12-of-20 for 178 yards passing with no TDs or interceptions. He also rushed five times for 15 yards while leading the Terp offense to 44 first-half points.

  • Some notable Maryland firsts -- TB Mario Merrils (first career rushing touchdown); RG Ryan Flynn (first career start); TB Sammy Maldonado (first TD as a Terp); CB Josh Allen (first career action); FB Maurice Smith (first career start); DT Conrad Bolston (first career action); PK Dan Ennis (first career kick/PAT); TB J.P. Humber (first career carry); QB Orlando Evans (first career touchdown pass); QB Joel Statham (first career action); OL Ryan McDonald (first career action).

  • Sophomore Ricardo Dickerson saw action on both sides of the ball tonight, playing both linebacker and fullback, positions he has rotated between the last year-plus.

  • Nick Novak kicked four field goals in a game for the second time in his career. He last accomplished the feat November 3, 2001, against Troy State. He also kicked three field goals of over 30 yards for the second time in his career. His 16 points tonight give him 241 for his career, third-most points in Maryland history.

  • Tonight's attendance was 51,590, the ninth-largest crowd in Byrd Stadium history. The crowd is also the second-largest crowd to see a home opener in Maryland history (largest was 54,715 vs. West Virginia in 1983, the second-largest crowd in school lore).

  • Next week's opponent, West Virginia, lost to Cincinnati, 15-13.

  • With the win, Maryland became the fifth school to score over 60 points against The Citadel. The Bulldogs had a worse loss in 1958 when they lost to Georgia 76-0.
