Women's Basketball Downs Wake Forest, 75-58

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Shay Doron sparked Maryland's offense in the second half scoring 23 of her career-high 32 points to lead the women's basketball team to a 75-58 victory over Wake Forest on Friday morning in Joel Coliseum. Doron's 32-point effort was the most ever scored by a Maryland freshman and is the seventh-highest point total in school history.

The Terps (11-3, 3-0) blew open a the game in the second-half after the teams were deadlocked at 28 at the break. The Terps, who improve to 3-0 in the ACC for the first time since the 1991-92 season, outscored the Deacs, 47-30, after halftime. The 47 points were the most points surrendered by Wake Forest (8-7, 1-3 ACC) in any half this season.

Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) finished the game 9-for-17 from the field, 3-for-7 from 3-point land and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Fellow freshman Kalika France (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) was the only other Maryland player in double figures. France scored 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists.

Maryland scored the game's first four points and pushed its lead to as many as five points in the first-half, 16-11, with 8:38 left. The Deacs answered with a 12-2 run over the next 3:51, capped off by a layup from Liz Strunk to give the Demon Deacons a 23-18 lead. The forward scored eight of her 14 first-half points over the span.

The Terps quickly responded with a 10-1 run of its own. Maryland regained a four-point lead with 1:00 left in the first-half, but the Deacs scored the final four points of the half as the teams entered the halftime lockerroom tied, 28-28.

The Deacs and Terrapins each struggled from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Maryland connected on only 12-for-31 (38.7%) from the field, while Wake Forest went 10-for-30 (33.3%) from the floor. The teams also combined to knock down just a single 3-point field goal on 11 attempts.

The second half saw both teams shoot above 50 percent with the Terps hitting on 56 percent of their shots. After Maryland took the lead on a Doron free throw, 31-30, it never trailed again, converting on nine of 10 free throw attempts to pull away.

The Deac's Liz Strunk scored a career-high 23 points, going 8-for-13 from the field, including a 3-pointer, and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Strunk established a new single game career-high for the third time this season.

Cotelia Bond-Young was the lone other Deacon in double figures. Bond-Young, coming off her career-high 27 point effort against NC State last Monday night, scored 14 points and dished out four assists.

Maryland closes out a two-game road swing at Florida State on Monday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
