#19/21 Maryland Women's Basketball Wins Fifth Straight

Dec. 12, 2004
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Shay Doron scored 20 points and had a career-high seven steals, while freshmen Crystal Langhorne and Ashleigh Newman each tallied 11 as the #19/21 Maryland women's basketball team upended Monmouth, 81-49, on Sunday afternoon at Comcast Center. The Terps won their fifth-straight game to improve to 7-1, its best start since the 1996-97 season.
The Terrapins limited Monmouth (4-4) to just 32.1 percent shooting for the game, the fifth time this season Maryland has kept its opponent under 35 percent from the floor.
The Terps never trailed in the game. Leading 16-13, Maryland outscored the Hawks, 24-3, in the final 11:23 of the first half to run out to a 40-16 advantage at the break. Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) led the Maryland defense with a career-high seven steals in the first half, forcing 17 Monmouth turnovers.
Freshman Laura Harper (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) netted six of the Terps' eight points to open the half and fellow freshman Langhorne's (Willingboro, N.J./Willngboro) bucket with 5:45 to go gave Maryland its biggest lead of the game, 70-38. Terps were even better on the offensive end in the last half, shooting at a 64 percent clip.
Newman (Shelbyville, Tenn./Shelbyville Central) was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor. Doron, who had 25 points in Maryland's win over St. Bonaventure earlier in the week, recorded her fourth 20-point outing of the season, while every Terrapin on the roster tallied at last two points in the game.
Maryland takes a week off before hosting in-state foe Coppin State on Monday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m.
