Freshman Crystal Langhorne's career-high 26 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season led the No. 17/17 Maryland women's basketball team to a 67-63 win over Massachusetts, the team's seventh-straight victory, on the first day of the Terrapin Classic on Wednesday night. The Terps play Marshall, who defeated Elon, 71-43, in the championship game on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. Elon and UMass play in the consolation match at 5 p.m.
Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) had 21 of her season-high 26 points in the first half, two points fewer than UMass had scored, helping the Terps to a 37-23 advantage at the break.
Pam Rosanio's three-pointer gave the Minutewomen a 7-4 lead to open the game, their biggest lead of the contest. However, Maryland's Langhorne polished off a three-point play to even the score at 7-7 with 16:16 remaining in the period.
At 10:13, Brooke Campbell's jumper pulled the Minutewomen to within, 18-17, but Langhorne's 10 points in a 19-5 Maryland surge gave the Terps a commanding 37-21 advantage and then went into the locker room ahead, 37-23.
The Terps outrebounded the Minutewomen, 25-13, and forced 13 turnovers in the first half to grab onto the lead despite UMass' 42.3 percent shooting.
After the break, the Terrapins pushed its lead back up to 16 points on two more occasions, the last time coming at 18:24 at 41-25. UMass began to claw its way back to within single digits. A 10-1 run keyed by four points from Tamara Tatham brought the Minutewomen to within 42-35. However, Maryland answered with a 13-4 to lead 55-39.
But UMass was not dissuaded in their cause. Despite trailing most of the second period by double digits, the Minutewomen rallied to get within 63-60, using a 12-0 run capped by Kate Mills' jumper with less than two minutes left to play in the game.
In their attempts to stop the clock, the Minutewomen were called for an intentional foul with just 27 seconds to go. Senior Anesia Smith (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) hit the first of two free throws to give Maryland a four-point edge, 64-60. Then sophomore Shay Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) went 3-for-4 down the stretch to seal the victory for the Terps.
Going 10-for-13 from the field. Langhorne's 26 points is the second most scored by a Terp in Comcast Center. Doron added 18 points and had four assists and three steals.
Maryland, who is playing without the injured Laura Harper (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) for the first time this season, was held to below 70 points for just the second time, but outrebounded the Minutewomen, 40-34.
UMass had four players in double figures. Brooke Campbell netted 12, while Kate Nelson had 11. Rosanio and Tatham each added 10.
In game one of the Terrapin Classic, Marshall (5-4) had four players in double-digits led by Sikeeta Shepard-Hall's 15 points, to lead the Thundering Herd to a 71-43 rout over Elon (1-8). The Herd used a 14-2 run to start the second half and break open a 29-24 halftime game. Elon's Shashonna Moore had team highs of 12 points and nine rebounds in the losing effort.
