ATLANTA -
Crystal Washington and Kalika France scored 13 points each, but the University of Maryland women's basketball team was edged by Georgia Tech, 58-57, Sunday afternoon in Atlanta. The Terps fell to 15-9, 7-6 in the ACC, while the Yellow Jackets improved their record to 13-11, 4-8 in the conference.
France ended up one rebound shy of a double-double, grabbing nine to go with her 13 points. Four Terrapins were in double figures, as Chrissy Fisher and Delvona Oliver each chipped in 10 points.
Maryland led by as many as seven points early in the first half, gaining a 12-5 advantage at the 12:40 mark on a layup by Washington. The Jackets fought back to tie the game at 19 at the seven-minute mark, and ended the half by going on a 12-4 run to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room.
Maryland erased the eight-point deficit early in the second half and tied the game at 34 on a layup by France with just over 14 minutes to go. The Terps then used strong rebounding and second-chance points to take a 53-47 lead at the five-minute mark.
A three-pointer by Megan Isom and a jumper by Fallon Stokes got Georgia Tech to within one, but Maryland's Oliver countered with a jump shot to maintain Maryland's three-point lead. From there, two more jumpers from Stokes and two clutch free throws from Alex Stewart put the Jackets up by three, and although Oliver connected on a layup with time expiring, the Terps fell just shy of the victory, losing 58-57.
Maryland outrebounded Georgia Tech, 46-39. France led the way with her nine boards, while Washington and Oliver grabbed seven apiece.
The Terrapins are back in action Thursday, Feb. 19, when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on the Tar Heels. That game tips off at 7 p.m.
