No. 2 Women's Lacrosse Edged By No. 4 Duke, 9-7

Feb. 29, 2004
DURHAM, N.C. - Second-ranked Maryland scored four of the game's last five goals but it wasn't enough to erase a 5-1 half time deficit as the Terps fell to No. 4 Duke, 9-7, Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils (3-0, 1-0) scored the game's first two goals before Kelly Coppedge got the Terrapins (1-1, 0-1) on track. Coppedge finished a feed from Annie Collins at the top of the crease on a restart at the 23:41 mark in the first half.
The rest of the first session was all Duke, as the Blue Devils tallied three more unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead into the half. Kirah Miles helped keep the Terps in the game making nine first-half saves. Duke outshot Maryland 18-10 in the first half and held a 5-2 advantage in draw controls in controlling the action.
The Terps and Blue Devils traded goals for the first 15 minutes of the second half before Jessica Dorney helped ignite a Maryland rally in the last 15 minutes. Dorney scored three goals in just under 10 minutes to cut the deficit to 9-6. Between Dorney's goals was an own goal by Maryland for Duke when a Terp defender tried to get the ball to Miles and wound up in the net.
Laura Warren tacked on another goal for the Terps with 2:06 left in the game to make it 9-7, but a Terp turnover after controlling the draw ended Maryland's comeback.
In the second half, Maryland outscored 6-4 and outshot Duke in the second half 16-8. Excellent goaltending by Duke's Megan Huether helped keep the Terrapins off the board. Huether finished the game with 15 saves, including four on free position shots. Huehter's performance overshadowed Miles' performance in the cage. Miles stopped a career-high 12 shots in the game.
"We had to really fight to come from behind," head coach Cindy Timchal said. "Give Duke credit because they played a real tough first half and took control when things weren't going our way. They (Duke) showed a lot more poise and patience offensively.
"I think we were much stronger in the second half. The bad news is we lost the good news is that it's the second game of the season."
Maryland looks to bounce back Wednesday, March 3, on the road at Syracuse.
