CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
Sophomore Chrissy Fisher scored 13 points and had five rebounds, but the University of Maryland women's basketball team fell at Virginia Thursday night, 64-51. The Terps are now 13-8, 5-5 in the ACC, while Virginia improved its record to 11-10 overall, 5-5 in the conference.
Also in double figures for Maryland were freshmen Shay Doron (10 points) and Kalika France (12 points, five rebounds). Crystal Washington hauled down seven rebounds while scoring six points.
The Terrapins jumped out to 8-0 lead, but the Cavaliers would crawl their way back to tie the game at 10 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. From there, Maryland would again extend a lead, and a basket by Kalika France with 31 seconds left in the half gave the Terps a 24-17 lead.
The second half began with a 5-0 Maryland run, but Virginia would use a run of its own, capped off by a LaTonya Blue layup, to take a 38-36 lead midway through the half. Maryland responded with a jumper by France to tie the game, but it would be as close as Brenda Frese's squad would get as Virginia pulled away late in the game.
Virginia guard Anna Prillaman led the Cavaliers with 11 points, while LaTonya Blue and Safiya Grant-Farley each chipped in 10 points.
Maryland returns to the court on Monday, Feb. 9, when it hosts Wake Forest at Comcast Center. That game begins at 7 p.m.
