PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The University of Maryland women's defeated got a career-high nine points from Kelly Coppedge on seven goals and two assists and cruised to a 21-6 victory over Brown Friday night in Providence, R.I.
A day after playing in 52-degree sunny weather, the Terps played in cold and windy conditions that reached into the teens with the wind chill. The result was the same, though, as the Terps posted another runaway victory.
Maryland got off to another quick start, scoring the game's first five goals, highlighted by a Coppedge goal in which she took a feed from behind the net from Acacia Walker, turned her back to the cage, and fired a shot over her shoulder that found the back of the net. The Terps' fifth goal came nine seconds after their fourth when Walker won the draw and found Coppedge who raced down the field and scored.
Brown registered its first score of the game midway through the first half, but the Terps responded with three straight goals from Katie Doolittle, Krista Pellizzi and Walker. Brown's Laurel Pierpont goal made the score 8-2, but the Coppedge scored three straight of her own to push the lead to 11-2. A late score by the Bears' Sarah Passano made the score 11-3 at the half.
After a Delia Cox goal to open the second half, Brown made a run at the Terps scoring three unanswered goals and cut the lead in half, 12-6. But the Terps would hold the Bears scoreless for the game's last 24 minutes and add nine more goals, including two for Coppedge, Krista Pellizi and Jessica Dorney. Cox, Emily Jaissle and Brooke Richards also scored a goal for Maryland in its game-ending 9-0 run.
Coppedge, who set career-highs in goals and points Thursday against Quinnipiac, broke both those marks with her seven-goal, two-assist output on Friday. Pellizzi had the first hat trick of her career and Walker added a game-high four assists (tying her career-high).
Maryland scored back-to-back 20 goal games for the first time since 2001 when the Terps defeated Brown 20-4 and UMBC 23-2.
The Terps will be back in action at home on Saturday, March 20, against Old Dominion.
