Final Stats
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Kelly Coppedge scored six goals and added two assists to lead seventh-ranked Maryland to an 18-7 victory over No. 20 Old Dominion Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field.
In addition to Coppedge's eight points, she also had a game-high six ground balls and five caused turnovers as well as four draw controls. She has scored at least eight points in her last three games, a tremendous scoring stretch that totals 25 points in that span. Delia Cox and Annie Collins tallied five points apiece as the Terrapins (5-2) won their third consecutive game. Collins' five points were a career high.
"I thought Kelly was exceptional today," head coach Cindy Timchal said. "She was all over the field making plays for us, and we needed that kind of performance today against a tough Old Dominion team. We didn't do as well as we would've liked against (Suzanne) Wosczyna, but she's a great player and really tough to stop."
After each team scored in the game's opening three minutes, Maryland's defense shined in holding the Monarchs off the board for the last 20 minutes of the half, while the Terps ran off five straight goals and carried a 7-2 lead into halftime. The Terps allowed just seven Old Dominion shots in the first half and forced the Lady Monarchs to commit 12 turnovers.
The Terrapins then exploded early in the second half, scoring six goals in the opening eight minutes to take a 13-4 lead with 22 minutes remaining. The run was capped by senior Meg Mallon's first career goal. The Lady Monarchs fought back with unanswered goals by Suzanne Wosczyna, Caroline Jacobs and Janine Rodriguez to trim the lead to six, but the Terps regrouped after a timeout and tallied the final five scores for the 11-goal margin of victory. Three goals from Coppedge in that span helped key the game-sealing spurt.
The Maryland defense refused to allow Old Dominion to get in any offensive flow. The Lady Monarchs were 11-21 in clear attempts and had only one assisted goal on the afternoon. Wosczyna paced the ODU offense with three goals and one assist.
Mallon and Greta Sommers and Molly Lambert each recorded their first goals of the season. Laura Warren chipped in a goal and an assist and Krista Pellizzi converted a free-position shot to round out the Terp scoring.
Maryland returns to action on Tuesday at 3 p.m., when they square off against No. 11 Dartmouth at Ludwig Field.
