Season Wrap-Up: Maryland Women's Basketball Makes Impressive Turnaround

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins made an impressive turnaround in just the second season under head coach Brenda Frese. A year that began with an eighth-place preseason pick in an ACC preseason media poll, the Terps capped the season earning their 13th NCAA Tournament bid in school history and winning a tournament game for the first time in 12 years.

Terrapin Accomplishments in 2003-04 At A Glance

  • Seeded 12th, upset fifth-seeded Miami (Fla.), 86-85, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, winning a tournament game in 12 years.
  • One of two ACC squads, along with top-seeded Duke, to advance in the NCAA Tournament and only 12th seed.
  • Earned their 13th NCAA Tournament bid and was one of four ACC teams to play in the postseason tournament.
  • Reached the ACC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 1998, leading most of the game before falling to top-seeded Duke, 70-63.
  • Tied for third in the ACC, their best showing since the 1996-97 campaign, after being picked to finish eighth by the media in a preseason poll.
  • Went 8-8 in ACC play, doubling their conference win totals from each of the last two seasons and equaling or surpassing their ACC win total from nine of the last 10 years.
  • Won 18 games, the most since the 1996-97 campaign, after collecting just 10 last year.
  • 6-1 start is the best since 1991-92.
  • 3-0 ACC start is the best since 1991-92.
  • Averaged 12.3-point margin of victories in ACC wins, including registering 17-point victories against Wake Forest, the biggest win in an ACC game since 2001.
  • Swept Wake Forest and Clemson during the regular season, the first time in three years the Terps have recorded series sweeps over any team.
  • Ranks 18th in the nation in three-point percentage (36.8).
  • Is the only team in the ACC other than Duke or North Carolina to lead the conference in any statistical category, topping the list in three-point percentage.
  • Posted a winning record the first three months of the season, a feat they have not accomplished since the 2000-01 season.
  • This season, Maryland scored more points (68.4 vs 67.4), shot better from three-point land (.368 vs 316) and from the charity stripe (.707 vs .616).

    Other Highlights

  • Maryland drew 13,446 fans to its final home game vs. Duke, the second-largest crowd in ACC history for women's basketball game.
  • The Terps appeared on television 10 times this season, including five national broadcasts.

    - In her first-collegiate outing, freshman Shay Doron tied the NCAA record with 23 free throws in a game vs. Coppin State. She also set the Maryland and ACC records with 27 attempts.
  • Freshman Shay Doron broke the school record with 136 free throws made, topping Kris Kirchner's record of 135 set during the 1979-80 season.
  • For just the fifth time in school history a freshman has led the team in scoring. Rookie Shay Doron was the team's top scorer at 13.5 ppg.
  • For the first time in school history, two Maryland freshmen have led the team in scoring. Shay Doron paced the scoring with 13.5 ppg and Kalika France was behind her with 11.7 ppg.
  • With her team-leading 6.0 rpg, Kalika France became just the fourth Maryland freshman in school history to lead the squad in rebounding.
  • Shay Doron became the first Maryland freshman to ever be named to an All-ACC squad when she was selected to the third team.
  • Kalika France became the first-ever Maryland freshman to ever be named Honorable Mention All-ACC.
  • Shay Doron tied the Maryland freshman single-game record when she dropped 32 points in a 75-58 win at Wake Forest on Jan. 9, 2004. The 32-points tied for the most by an ACC player this season and is the seventh-highest point total in school history.
  • Senior Vicki Brick played in her 100th-career game in a Terrapin uniform when she entered the Georgia Tech game on February 15.
  • Senior Delvona Oliver received her first-career ACC recognition when she was named Honorable Mention All-ACC.
  • Four different Terps posted double-doubles this season and, in each case, all four accomplished that feat for the first time in their careers. Senior Crystal Washington went on to tally five double-doubles, the most by a Terp this year. Sophomore Chrissy Fisher, freshman Kalika France and senior Delvona Oliver each recorded a double-double once.
  • Posting a career season, senior Crystal Washington recorded personal bests in every statistical category, including making a team-high 40 blocks on the year, the ninth-most single-season total in school history.
  • Senior Delvona Oliver's 28 blocks is the 15th-most season total in Maryland history.
  • Sophomore Chrissy Fisher's 38 three pointers ties for the eighth-most single-season total at Maryland.
