COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland football team held its first scrimmage of spring practice on Saturday at Byrd Stadium and the result was arguably the team's best offensive outing of the offseason. Several new faces made a name for themself as the young Terrapins continued their strong work this spring.
The Terps started the day by warming up, running skelly (7-on-7) and then went straight into the scrimmage.
The most notable accomplishment of today's session was likely the lack of penalties committed by the Terps. With a full group of ACC officials, the Terps played a hard-nosed, aggressive scrimmage, but did so with a low number of penalties, especially for a young team this early in spring ball.
Head coach Ralph Friedgen was very pleased with his team's play and expressed what the team got out of today's nearly two hours of scrimmage time.
"You learn who can make plays, who can adjust to blitzes and changing situations," said Friedgen. "You like to see who can perform under pressure. We did very well today. I was impressed and encouraged. We made very few mistakes which is good for such a young team."
As they have all spring, the quarterbacks were the focus of the day and on this morning at Byrd Stadium, the outcome was all that could be expected.
"Sam Hollenbach might have had his best day since he's been here," said Friedgen. "The guy who really surprised me, though, was (Dan) Gronkowski. He really hasn't gotten a lot of snaps this spring but he showed poise and had a very nice day."
