COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland football team held its first scrimmage of spring practice on Saturday at Byrd Stadium and the result was arguably the team's best offensive outing of the offseason. Several new faces made a name for themself as the young Terrapins continued their strong work this spring.

The Terps started the day by warming up, running skelly (7-on-7) and then went straight into the scrimmage.

The most notable accomplishment of today's session was likely the lack of penalties committed by the Terps. With a full group of ACC officials, the Terps played a hard-nosed, aggressive scrimmage, but did so with a low number of penalties, especially for a young team this early in spring ball.

Head coach Ralph Friedgen was very pleased with his team's play and expressed what the team got out of today's nearly two hours of scrimmage time.

"You learn who can make plays, who can adjust to blitzes and changing situations," said Friedgen. "You like to see who can perform under pressure. We did very well today. I was impressed and encouraged. We made very few mistakes which is good for such a young team."

As they have all spring, the quarterbacks were the focus of the day and on this morning at Byrd Stadium, the outcome was all that could be expected.

"Sam Hollenbach might have had his best day since he's been here," said Friedgen. "The guy who really surprised me, though, was (Dan) Gronkowski. He really hasn't gotten a lot of snaps this spring but he showed poise and had a very nice day."

Some notable efforts from today's scrimmage:

  • As stated, the Terp quarterbacks all performed well, going a collective 32-of-50 (.640) for 459 yards, five touchdowns and just one interception. Sophomore Joel Statham got the most action and finished 13-of-22 for 167 yards and a pair of TDs with no intercpetions.
  • The surprise performance of the day most likely came from grayshirt and true freshman Dan Gronkowski. Gronkowski led a pair of scoring drives, throwing a 16-yard TD to Greg Powell to cap one and plunging in from the one for another score. He finished 7-of-8 for 108 yards and a TD with no interceptions.
  • Redshirt freshman Wesley Jefferson showed the type of playmaking skills that made him the top inside linebacker prospect in the country as a prep in 2003. The redshirt freshman led all defenders with 12 tackles (seven solo) and added a TFL. He was seemingly everwhere.
  • Sophomore Josh Wilson had the lone interception of the day, collecting a ball tipped by Jon Condo and returning it 22 yards.
  • The Abiamiri brothers had another nice day with each tying for the team lead in receptions with five. Tight end Rob had five for 49 yards and WR Paschal finished with five for 60 yards and a nice 29-yard TD grab.
  • WR/Specialist Steve Suter had a slow start to the day, contributing little in the early going. Still recovering from a hamstring injury, Suter came on late in the scrimmage, however, notching a pair of long touchdown receptions, splitting the safeties in the end zone for a 36-yard effort on his first score.
