Spring Football Practice Report #9

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland football team got a full day of work in on Thursday, enjoying an uncharacteristically nice weather day. The Terrapins' regularly-scheduled outing in nice weather ended with coaches and players alike talking about the next session, if for no other reason, than how soon that practice would come.

Because of poor weather conditions (unlike that of Thursday), the Terps had several practice sessions rescheduled and tomorrow will certainly go down as the most dreaded. The coaching staff is hosting a clinic for area prep coaches during the day so the team will be practicing on Friday from 5:45 to 7:45 a.m. That time both gives the coaches a chance to get to their clinic on time while the players will be able to make it to class. The team will, however, be going in shells on Friday, making it less of a physically demanding practice than it would have been.

On Thursday, the Terps continued their energetic play, with big hits being the order of the day. Notes from Thursday's practice include:

In team drills, CB Domonique Foxworth put a big hit on tight end Rob Abiamiri as Abiamiri came across the middle, trying to make his way to a Joel Statham pass that was tipped at the line of scrimmage.

QB Sam Hollenbach completed a nice out pass to Jo Jo Walker and the Terp defensive back in coverage took the wrong path to the ball, ultimately resulting in what would have been an 80-yard touchdown for Walker.

Backup safety Milton Harris put a big hit on J.P. Humber at the end of a nice 10-yard run by the sophomore.

WR Derrick Fenner continues to look good in his role as a starting receiver. In today's practice, he ran a flawless route to get open and Statham put the ball on the money on a 15-yard out.

DT Conrad Bolston made a nice play in team drills, breaking into the offense's backfield and jarring the ball loose from TB Josh Allen. The ball was ultimately recovered by LB William Kershaw.

One of the more dedicated attendees to spring practice has been high school senior and 2004 recruit Trey Covington. The highly-touted linebacker, who will compete at the SAM spot in the fall, has not missed a single session this spring.

The Terrapin defense came up with sacks in back-to-back plays as linebackers Jeris Smith and Tim Cesa each made their way into the offensive backfield.

Scrimmage on Saturday
The Terps will get after it again on Saturday, scrimmaging at 3:00 p.m. in Byrd Stadium. Fans are welcomed to attend.
