Women's Lax: Jen Marmion Q & A

April 20, 2004

Terps Today (TT): When did you teach yourself how to play guitar?
Jen Marmion (JM): When I was at St. Lawrence University (2000-01), all my friends were really good at it, and they inspired me and encouraged me through the learning process. It was kind of a social thing to do. I love music. If you ask anyone, I have the most diverse music taste.

TT: How did you get your nickname, Lady?
JM: Well, since my last name is Marmion, most people think marmalade, and then people thought of the song "Lady Marmalade" because of the whole Moulin Rouge movie. When I came to Maryland the movie was still a hot topic.

TT: What's your favorite song to play on the guitar now?
JM: I've been trying to teach myself classical rock like Eric Clapton, and so I've been practicing that a little bit. But I have a favorite I like to play for everybody that's called "(When You Say) Nothing at All" by Allison Krauss.

TT: How do you order your Chipotle burrito?
JM: I like chicken, a lot of rice, beans, a few other extras and a little "Arriba!" on the side. I like the Mexican atmosphere.

TT: Of all the CDs you have, which three are the most random?
JM: Eminem, Fleetwood Mac and Best of the Big Band Era.

TT: What's your worst habit?
JM: I bite my nails.

TT: What are you going to do when you graduate?
JM: I'm going to work for Merck Industries. I'm going to doing surgeries on rats. I'll be basically hooking their circulatory and respiratory systems onto monitors and injecting drugs into them and then seeing how they cope to that and see the effects on them afterwards.

TT: What's your favorite quote from Coach Timchal?
JM: Well, I don't have hips, so sometimes during practice, my sweats slide over the shorts I have on underneath, so she tells me, "Jen Marmion, pull your pants up or get off the field."

TT: How did you get started in wrestling?
JM: I really wanted to get in shape for my senior lacrosse season in high school, and I heard about how wrestling gets people into really good shape. I had to pass three different qualification tests in order to compete because I was a girl, so I passed those and ended up doing pretty well. It was pretty cool.

TT: Did you ever pin anyone?
JM: Yep. It was pretty cool.

TT: What's the first CD you can remember buying?
JM: The Best of Cat Stevens.

TT: What song do have to turn off when you hear it on the radio because you hate it so much?
JM: Bette Midler, "Wind Beneath My Wings." It makes me want to cry not because I'm sad but because it hits a nerve.
