Terps Face Another Test In No. 3 Loyola

April 30, 2004

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The fourth-ranked Maryland Terrapins (12-4) will look to end its two-game skid on the road against No. 3 Loyola. Including today, Maryland's last three games have come against the current No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the nation according to the latest IWLCA poll.

Loyola has won the last two meetings between the two teams, including a dramatic 9-8 loss a season ago when the teams were ranked first and second in the nation. In all four of Maryland's losses this season, the Terps have failed to score more than 10 goals.

Terp Tidbits

  • Kelly Coppedge was shutout of the scoring column against Princeton for the first time in 40 games. Before the game against the Tigers, the last time Coppedge was held without a point was April 27, 2002. Despite not leading the way in the scoring column, Coppedge proved why she is one of the best all-around players in the country as she scooped a game-high six ground balls and also added three draw controls for the Terps.
  • In a matchup that featured some of the best players in college lacrosse, Maryland's Delia Cox stole the show in the game against Princeton. The sophomore matched her career high with six goals as she was the primary source of offense for the Terps.
  • Cox has proven that she is the next in line as the next great Maryland scorer. She has 77 goals in her first two seasons (three more than Kelly Coppedge scored in her first two seasons).
  • The Terps went to overtime for the first time this season against Princeton.
  • The Maryland defense limited Princeton to eight goals -- it's lowest output of the 2004 season.
  • Freshman Meghan Higgins was critical to the Terp run in the second half against Princeton. Higgins helped Maryland win four of the last six draw controls in the game.
  • The Terrapins have not registered an assist in the last two games, both losses, an anomaly for a team that leads the ACC in that category. The last assisted Maryland goal came against North Carolina on April 17 (Annie Collins to Jess Dorney). The Terps have played 132 minutes without an assisted goal.
  • Maryland has outscored its oppoents 17-4 in the first five minutes of games this season.
  • Princeton Superlatives: Goals: Cox (6); Assists: None; Points: Cox (6); Shots: Cox (8); Ground Balls: Coppedge (5); Draw Controls: Coppedge (3), Richards (3); Caused Turnovers: Coppedge (3).
