COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
It took Maryland just :19 second to flex its muscle against No. 2 Georgetown as Delia Cox raced down the field and scored, giving the Terps a lead they would not relinquish as they defeated the Hoyas 13-8 Wednesday evening in front of a season-high 1,004 fans at Ludwig Field.
Senior Kelly Coppedge led the way for the Terps scoring six goals and adding two assists in the victory. Cox netted a hat trick and added an assist for Maryland as the Terrapins extended their winning streak to eight and moved to 10-2 on the year, while Georgetown fell to 7-2. Maryland has won three games over ranked opponents in this eight-game span, capped by a win over the second-ranked Hoyas.
Goalie Kirah Miles stopped 13 shots and the Maryland defense refused to allow any Georgetown players run free in front of the net. The Hoyas' leading scorer, Sarah Oliphant, was held scoreless and limited to just four shots.
Just over a minute after scoring her first goal of the game, Cox scored again after Coppedge won the draw and put Maryland on offense.
Gloria Lozano got Georgetown on the board on a free-position shot at 23:01, but Coppedge responded with a pair of goals - the second coming on a nice feed from Annie Collins. The Hoyas rallied on goals from Catherine Elbe and Anouck Peters, but the Terps again had an answer with four straight goals in just over three minutes to push the lead to 8-2. The Hoyas would add a pair of scores and head to the locker room trailing 8-5.
Georgetown had opportunities to cut the Maryland lead in the first half, but failed to convert on three free-position shots. The Hoyas were just 4-10 on free-position shots for the game.
Coppedge set the tone in the second half with an unassisted goal at 25:22. The Hoyas would score three of the game's next four goals to make the score 10-8 with 15:25 remaining, but Coppedge shut the door on the rally with a pair of goals -- one set up by a beautiful move behind the cage in which she faked a Georgetown defender and wheeled in front of the net unmarked for the score. Acacia Walker also netted a goal to close out the scoring for Maryland.
Despite being outshot 32-27, Maryland held a 13-10 edge in the draw controls, including nine in the first half. On three of those nine, Maryland scored immediately without a change of possession.
Maryland faces another challenge on Saturday as the Terps take on No. 9 Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays are 10-0 on the season. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Homewood Field.
