Terps Open NCAA Tournament Against Temple

The Maryland Terrapins, seeded third in the NCAA Tournament, will face Temple on Thursday, May 13, at 4 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The game is a re-match of last year's first round game, a game in which the Terps won 26-6. The game will be broadcast live on www.wmucsports.com, and LiveStats will be available on umterps.com.

The winner of this game will face the winner of Duke-Georgetown on Sunday. The site and time of that game will be announced the morning of Friday, May 14.

The Terps (14-4) are making their 15th consecutive and 20th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA is in its 22nd year of sponsoring a women's lacrosse tournament, which began in 1983. Maryland has won eight NCAA titles and two AIAW titles (the governing body for women's collegiate lacrosse before the NCAA) for a total of 10 national titles. Maryland has advanced to the final four in eight of the last nine years.

Temple's two national titles (1982 and 1984) were won against Maryland. This is Temple's 16th NCAA tournament appearance. Temple (11-7) earned an NCAA berth by winning the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

The Week That Was

Maryland got five goals from senior Kelly Coppedge on Senior Day as the No. 3 Maryland Terrapins defeated No. 20 George Mason 13-9, last Sunday. In a close game for most of the afternoon, the Terps rattled off five unanswered goals in the middle of the second half to secure the victory.

Junior Acacia Walker scored four points on one goal and three assists, and senior Annie Collins tallied two goals and one assist for three points to help pace the Maryland offense.As has been their trademark in the latter part of the season, the Terps took the early lead on goals from Jessica Dorney and Walker.

The Patriots were able to capture the lead early in the second half, but Maryland put on a 6-0 run over the next 14 minutes to take a commanding 12-6 lead. Collins and Coppedge, two of Maryland's seven seniors, helped key the run with a pair of goals each. Senior Laura Warren and sophomore Delia Cox also found the back of the net to help key the Terrapin run.

Defensively for the Maryland, Greta Sommers was able to cause two turnovers and scoop a game-high five ground balls. Tess McLeod also forced two Patriot turnovers in her final regular season game for the Terps.

Coppedge was named Honorable Mention Player of the Week by WomensLacrosse.com.

Tourney Tidbits

Maryland is 34-10 in NCAA Tournament play. The Terps are the winningest program in NCAA Tournament history. Maryland is 45-15 all-time in postseason tournaments (USWLA, AIAW and NCAA) with just three losses in the last 10 years.

Head coach Cindy Timchal is 26-5 (.839) at Maryland in the NCAA Tournament. Her overall record in the tournament is 27-10 (.730). This is her 19th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Of the 17 individual and team records kept by the NCAA in tournament play, a Maryland player or team holds or shares eight of those records. Current assistant coach Jen Adams holds the NCAA Tournament records for assists in a game (7 vs. Monmouth, 2001), tournament (15 in 2001), and points in a game (11 vs. Monmouth in 2001) and tournament (26, in 2001). As a team, Maryland holds the record for goals in a game (26 vs. Temple, 2003), goals for both teams (32, twice, most recently vs. Temple, 2003), shots in a game (52 vs. Temple, 2003), and shots from both teams (78 vs. James Madison, 1998).

Scouting The Owls

The Owls are 11-7 (6-1 in the A-10) and head into Thursday's game riding a four-game winning streak and having won eight of their last nine. Temple has scored at least 10 goals in its last nine games and has gone over the 20-goal mark three times.

Temple received its NCAA Tournament bid after defeating Duquesne 12-11 in overtime of the Atlantic-10 finals. Tiffany Pulaski was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and she also received national Player of the Week honors by WomensLacrosse.com and InsideLacrosse.com.

Head coach Kim Ciarrocca is in her 12th season at the helm of the program and 15th overall. Her record in Philadelphia is 133-76, and her career record stands at 158-90.

Series Notes

Maryland owns a 15-10-1 record in its history of play versus Temple. The two teams were regular opponents from 1981-2000.

Temple owned the early part of the series between the two schools, winning nine of the first 12 meetings and tying another. The two schools played every year from 1981-2000 and early on, played in the same conference (EAIAW, 1981 and 1982).

The Terps have since won 13 straight games in the series with the Owls' last win coming in 1989.
