Georgetown, Maryland Quotes

Georgetown Kim Simons
Opening remarks:
"Obviously, it was an unbelievable team effort, it just seemed seamless today in terms of one player to the next and everyone doing their job. At those critical points -- and there are a lot of critical points when you play Maryland, and in the past we've had trouble with those when we've played them -- when we needed to come together and move forward and take control of the game we did that, and that was the difference."
On the defensive effort:
"Our defense was incredible all over the field, and that's one of the things we focused on. We really just tried to come in and not give up easy goals, because we know that they will capitalize on you when you get a little over-anxious or if you try to hard. We tried to do our best to play great team defense to make it tough for them. We went in without any matchups because we wanted to focus on what our team defense wanted to do, and that's exactly what we did all over the field. We had a sub (Lucy Poole) on Coppedge on two huge, huge isolation plays and she did great. There were a lot of unsung heroes."
Goalie Sarah Robinson
On the differences between this game and the first meeting:
"There was no where to go but up, I had an IV in my arm the day we played Maryland the first time, so I felt a lot better today. This team has been one of the most exciting to play with and for that I've ever had the honor to play, so there's nothing but good feelings after a game like this with this team.
Defender Michi Ellers
On the difference between the this game and the first meeting:
"I think the first time we played against Maryland, we put a lot of pressure on us because we knew didn't have a good history going into it. This game, it was more about us, and we really didn't care who we were playing, we just went out there and played and see what we could do."
Midfielder Gloria Lozano
On capitalizing on Maryland's turnovers:
"I think it goes back to playing defense all over the field, and we've struggled at times all year doing that. I think it comes down to a mental committment, and I think every player made a committment to be relentless all over the field, chasing players down and trying to out-work and out-hustle them, and I think it really showed today."
Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal
Opening remarks:
"Obviously today's a very sad day for Maryland lacrosse, but we were beaten by a really fine Georgetown team today. Today they were tough, and we just kind of fell short on today. I think if we're going to lose, then I want these players here beside me. It's sad that we lost, but I'm proud of this team. Even though we didn't execute well, we fought hard to the very end to try and come back. And you just have to give Georgetown credit for playing a good game against us today."
On the possession:
"That has been a key element, the draw controls, but from there, we just failed to execute at times offensively and we would come up and turn it over. From there, we gave up some fast break opportunities that we normally don't do, and that really kept us on our heels a little bit. We did have possession, we just weren't able to take care of the ball when we had it.
"The turnovers were pretty even, but we had some critical caused turnovers and we would then just give it back, so I think that's what really hurt us. We worked hard to come up with the ball and then uncharacteristically not handle the pressure well and they would get the ball back."
Senior Kelly Coppedge
On 300 career points:
"Yeah, it's bitter-sweet. I'd definitely rather not have that 300th point if it meant that we would move on. It's an honor to be up there in some of the statistics, but I just hope for the best for the rest of the team that they can go out and do it next year."
On finishing her career:
"It's going to be weird not coming back next year and running the two-mile with the team and not being here every day. But I think this team had so much heart and effort that I learned a lot. Winning and losing doesn't define you as a person, so I think it's really important for all the girls on our team to keep their heads up because we worked so hard to come as far as we did because no one thought that we were going to come this far."
Junior Acacia Walker
On the Georgetown pressure in the midfield:
"They are a strong team in the midfield, they have some tall and athletic girls, and I think that's one way we beat them before was in the midfield, and I think they probably tried to capitalize on that: stronger midfield defense. We just didn't handle the pressure the way we should've. Just another thing to work on for next year."
