Terps Repeat Grass-Roots Sales Effort in Local Lawns

May 20, 2004
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the second straight season, the University of Maryland football season-ticket campaign took to the streets and neighborhoods across the region when new Terp football yard signs popped up in thousands of places in the area.
The signs are part of a season-ticket campaign that began in February designed to capitalize on the success of three straight seasons with at least 10 victories and a convincing win over West Virginia in the Toyota Gator Bowl on New Year's Day 2004. New "Fear the Turtle" signs are a colorful and attractive means of drawing attention to the campaign, which has already resulted in very high rate of renewal and new purchases of season tickets for the fall of 2004.
"The tremendous success of the yard sign campaign last summer has prompted us to enhance and continue the campaign for the 2004 football season," said Chrystie Klar, the director of marketing for Maryland Athletics. "Last year we received hundreds of e-mails and phone calls of fans wanting more and sighting signs all across the east coast. With distribution beginning earlier this year, we hope that more Terp fans will display them in their yards and businesses and continue to spread the Terrapin fever."
The yard signs are being placed with season-ticket holders, Terrapin Club members and Maryland fans throughout the region. Six thousand yard signs were distributed to fans who attended the Terps' annual Red-White Spring Football Game on April 24.
Fans interested in putting signs in their yards can pick them up at the Maryland Athletics Marketing Office, located on the ground level of Comcast Center, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
For the first season ever, Terrapin football fans can also purchase or renew their season tickets online by setting their web browser to www.umterps.com and following the directions.
The season-ticket campaign will continue until the Terrapins' home-opener on Saturday, Sept. 4 against Northern Illinois.
