Germantown, Md. -
In its first of two scrimmages this season, the Maryland women's soccer team defeated the University of Richmond tonight 2-1 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown. Mallory Mahar (Medina, Ohio) headed a Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.) cross past Richmond keeper Kelly Kolker for the Terps' second goal - the eventual game-winner.
The two teams played three 30-minute periods, with Maryland holding an advantage in shots, shots on goal and corners in each of those three periods. The Terps fired six shots at Richmond goalkeeper Kelly Kolker in the first of the 30-minute frames, but were unable to convert and headed into the second period in a scoreless tie.
Maryland got on the board first in the second period, as freshmen Kelly Rozumalski (Middleburg, N.Y.) and Carissa Gilbert (Liverpool, N.Y.) connected in the 58th minute to give the Terps a 1-0 advantage. Gilbert, who had just entered the game, took a pass down the right sideline and crossed it to Rozumalski who beat Kolker one-v-one for the score.
Richmond responded less than two minutes later when an Annette Isham corner got loose in front of the Maryland net and was knocked in by Carrie Holland with 48 seconds remaining in the period. The Holland goal tied the game at 1-1 and came on one of just four Richmond shots on the night.
Early in the third frame, Mahar put the Terps up for good, firing a header past the Richmond netminder. The goal came at the 70:21 mark of the contest, and the Terps held on to claim the victory by that same 2-1 margin.
Maryland returns to Germantown on Sunday to take on George Washington at 7:30 p.m and begins its regular season next Friday (8/27) at Towson at 4:00 p.m.
