Notes
Head Coach Brenda Frese
"I am proud of the fact that we hung in there despite it being a tough night. I am glad we kept our composure in the end. We made some key free throws and obviously we have been having a tough time at the free throw line, but we are going to get that back. I am happy that we pulled out what was not a pretty game tonight."
On the team's shooting performance
"I wish I had an answer. It was a difficult night for both teams offensively. We couldn't get into any kind of rhythm. The 23 turnovers remain a concern for us. We weren't in sync or a good flow, but we can correct that. It was nice to see that with the amount of time Shay missed in the second half, we were able to get something gong. We also worked Aurelie back in. We're still working on rotations and getting different combinations in the game. Crystal's traveling calls took us out of our flow, but it was good to see us pull out this win."
On trailing at half and winning
"It was very important. Obviously, we were disappointed with our road loss at Florida State. To be able have the game come down to the end and for the team to keep its composure, especially after being down at halftime was excellent. I thought they did a great job of regrouping at halftime and coming out ready to play."
On Shay Doron playing through a shoulder injury
"It tells you what kind of winner and competitor she is. She'll do anything to get back on the court. She's extremely tough to be playing in a lot of pain but she wants to do whatever she can to help the team be successful."
On correcting the turnover-assist ratio
"We need to get better offensively. Our passing was not that good; especially at the angles we were trying to enter the ball. Just a lot of unforced turnovers that we can do a better job with better perimeter position and passing down low. We just have to go back to the basics."
On Aurelie Noirez's performance tonight
"Aurelie did a tremendous job even though she hasn't been practicing. She's been conditioning herself so that she would be in better shape when she came back. She is going to give us a lot of solid minutes toward the end of the season."
Sophomore Guard Shay Doron
On playing with her shoulder injury
"I was pretty conscious of it, but I just had to play through it. It was pretty stiff at halftime, but I want to help the team in whatever way I can. If I have to contribute in other ways I will."
Freshman Center Crystal Langhorne
On the physical play down low
"They were big and physical, but I just tried to box them out."
University of Virginia Quotes:
Head Coach Debbie Ryan:
On the game
"We never really got on track tonight. We got really good shots to start the game but the physical nature of the game bothered us a lot tonight. We never really got into a rhythm. The rebounding killed us. We shot a little better in the second half, but we just were not on our game tonight. You have to prepare yourself for a physical game and some players were and some weren't. Maryland is so good at stringing two and three buckets in a row. We would get the lead and then they would string some in a row. We just weren't there tonight."
On Freshman Guard Takisha Granberry
"She kept us in the game in the first half. She was fearless, took open shots and I think she did a great job tonight."
Senior Guard/Forward LaTonya Blue
On the team's shooting
"The layups just rolled around the rim. I wasn't nervous playing in Maryland, it just wasn't my night."
"Takisha (Granberry) really stepped it up for us tonight along with Sharnee (Zoll)."
Senior Forward Jocelyn Logan-Friend
"It was physical but they had really strong post players."
