Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
On the game
"It was a disappointing game, and obviously we're a better team than what we showed today. All the credit goes to NC State. I thought they had a great game plan, really keying in on Crystal [Langhorne] and Shay [Doron]. They really took it at us. They're a great defensive team and obviously did a lot of things on the offensive end, but I feel like there are a lot of things that we can control. Being able to take better care of the basketball, cutting down on our turnovers, making free throws; we just have to keep working at it. We have to be ready to come out and play a full 40 minutes."
On the turnovers
"[NC State is] tremendous on the ball defensively. We were not stepping up and making free throws, and then we started turning the ball over, to be honest. Just a lot of unforced turnovers. That's a credit to their defense. I think they're one of the best defensive teams that we'll face in conference."
On the NC State rebounding
"I think a lot of that has to do with the lineup they play. They play four guards. Where we need to get the mismatch on the offensive end, we never took advantage of. And on the defensive end, because of their guard play, they were much quicker to the ball and were able to get a lot of easy opportunities."
On any concern
"This team is too tough. I think we've been hit with some adversity. Shay [Doron] hasn't been able to practice in two weeks, and Kalika [France] has been on and off in her practice, and you lose some of the rhythm and the flow. By no means is that an excuse. The other players have to step up and play. We just have to have better practices and get our timing back. Let's just put it this way. When your staff is practicing, you know you have problems. Shay and Kalika's leadership in practice has been a big thing, so now you're looking at your young players. As we told our freshmen, they can't act like freshmen, they don't have that luxury in this program. They came here to play. We are young, and we've been hit with a lot of injuries so we have to put it into perspective. We just have to come out and control as much as we can control."
On Jade Perry
"She had an ankle sprain, and was visibly limping even on the bench. So we felt that with their quickness, she shouldn't go back out. It was probably one of her better offensive nights, so it was unfortunate--I wanted to get her back in. But they were going to be too quick for us."
Maryland Center Crystal Langhorne
On the NC State rebounding
"[NC State] crashed the boards hard off the floor. We didn't box out."
Maryland Guard Shay Doron
On the NC State defense
"I knew coming in that [my shoulder] was going to be sore. I wouldn't have played if I didn't feel like it would be 100%. Their defense keyed on me a lot tonight, and they did a good job."
N.C. State Quotes
Head Coach Kay Yow
On the game
"I couldn't be prouder of the team's effort on the court tonight. They just gave everything they had and they played really solid on both ends of the court. Maryland has a great team and Brenda (Frese) has done a great job with them. We knew how very tough it would be to win here. Our execution was good today."
On their game plan
"We knew that defense is always a big part of our game plan. It's something we depend on game in and game out. (Shay) Doron was also a key person. We know (Kalika) France has had some great games against us and (Anesia) Smith the way she penetrates; we knew we would have to get on her early. We had a lot of things on our plate. We knew rebounding and transition were keys. We had to really pay attention to those areas."
On their defense
"Our defense was extraordinary in the first half and helped each other so well. And they were very alert to what was happening on the floor in the first half."
On Maryland Center Crystal Langhorne
"At our best effort she got 19 rebounds today, so I mean, what can I say? We played hard, we did everything we could, but we knew (Crystal) Langhorne was a person that we had to key on."
On Maryland Guard Shay Doron
"I think we can take complete credit for 2 points from a player like (Shay) Doron."
On the team's effor
"It was a team effort. We knew that no individual can stop (Crystal) Langhorne, no one can stop (Shay) Doron and the others. I mean Maryland has a great team. We knew that we had to play hard individually but we would have to have a lot of help. I think that that is what the team did best defensively is to be ready to give help. They communicated on defense and talked and helped each other. We had to go hard on both ends and get those rebounds."
On the importance of this victory
"I feel this victory and the victory at Virginia Tech were both really big wins for us. I think it's big because we only play these teams once and it could affect the seeding in the tournament. I think all our ACC games, when we play a team once become a little more critical...especially on the road. Because we all know it's tough to win on the road."
Junior Forward/Center Tiffany Stansbury
"I think my game plan was just to step it up and be a lot more physical and take it to them. We were being very aggressive on defense and stepped it up."
