CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 20/21 Maryland women's basketball fell to Virginia, 63-61, on Sunday afternoon in ACC action in Charlottesville, Va. Freshman Crystal Langhorne continues to make a strong case for ACC Rookie of the Year, recording her 12th double-double of the season, despite the setback.
Virginia's LaTonya Blue (18-8, 7-5 ACC) led all scorers with a career-high 29 points, including seven of the Cavaliers' final nine points.
Maryland's (18-7, 7-6 ACC) balanced attack was not enough to claim the win. Sophomore Shay Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) led the Terps with 15 points, while Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) netted 11 points to go with 12 rebounds. Sophomore Kalika France (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) had 10 points in the loss, with senior Anesia Smith (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) contributing nine.
In the first half, after Virginia took a 9-5 lead just under four minutes into the game, the Terps answered with a 16-4 run over the next eight minutes to jump ahead, 21-13. But the Wahoos came back to tie the game, 25-25, with four minutes remaining in the first period and eventually took a two-point lead into the half, 31-29.
The Terps shot 48.1 percent from the field, but had trouble taking care of the ball, committing 10 first-half turnovers.
The second half saw Virginia extend its lead to 44-38, but back-to-back traditional three-point plays by France and Smith tied the game up for the eighth time, 44-44.
After the Terrapins built a seven-point lead, 55-48, at 6:53, the Cavaliers evened the game for the ninth and final time at 57-57 on a three-pointer by Blue. Blue sandwhiched a jumper and a pair of free throws around a Doron jumper gave the home team a four-point lead with 24 seconds remaining to seal the win. Smith's jumper at the buzzer resulted in the final score, 63-61.
Maryland returns home for its final ACC regular season game when Virginia Tech visits College Park, Md., on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. It is the Hokies first trip to Comcast Center as a member of the ACC.
