Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
On the game
It was by far one of our most unselfish games that we've played as a team when you look at a positive assist-to-turnover ratio, and having four players score in double figures. I just thought we did a tremendous job moving the ball on offense. We defended well in the first half. We had a long way to go in the second half defensively, but we did a tremendous job getting in rhythm on the offensive end.
On her 100th coaching victory
Those 100 wins are about the teams that I've coached. Being under three different programs, and all the players I've had the opportunity to coach, they're the ones that get the credit, as well as my assistant coaches and the work they've done. Obviously I'm very excited to be able to do it at home, in front of our great fans.
On momentum after last week's close games at Duke and Arizona
You're starting to see us play with a lot of confidence, especially on the offensive end. We gained a lot from last week's trip, playing Duke to the wire and then less than 48 hours later to go out to the West Coast. It shows just how tough our kids have to be. I really like how we're playing, unselfishly, really clicking. We talked a lot about really wanting to build some momentum in February.
On rr>ebounding
There were not as many offensive rebounds to go after because of the way we shot the ball. That's probably the biggest thing. We have to do a better job on the defensive end keeping them off the glass. Sixteen offensive rebounds is way too many. I'm ecstatic to see our turnovers go down to 12. We have to be under 20 if we want to compete, and I know our rebounding will be there.
Maryland guard Shay Doron
On her shoulder
It might be a little sore for the rest of the season, but it's not affecting me in any way. That's a positive. But it's getting better every day.
On Coach Frese's 100th coaching win
I didn't know. A win is a win for us, and she's a winner regardless. She wants to win regardless, and I don't think that went through her mind.
Maryland guard Kalika France
On momentum after last week's close games at Duke and Arizona
We're just trying to mature as a team. Last week helped us realize that we're growing up. I don't think it's fair to call us young anymore. We have to step our game up. I think we realized we can compete with Duke on their home court where last year we got blown out. It's just maturity on our part.
On making a run towards the ACC Tournament
If we keep playing the way we're playing, the sky is the limit. Teams know that when they come in here, it's going to be a harsh environment. It's hard to come and win on our home court. After losing to NC State, we vowed that we won't come out with that energy and low intensity anymore. We're going to protect this house because it's all we have. And then, we just have to show that we're a good team on the road also. And I think lately, we've been doing a better job of that.
Head Coach MaChelle Joseph
On team's performance:
"Maryland is a good team; they're very talented, but I don't know if it was all about Maryland tonight. I really don't think my team was ready to play during the first 20 minutes of the game. We were lethargic and it didn't seem like we executed at all. I'm not taking anything away from Maryland because I thought their kids played extremely hard, and they're obviously very talented."
On Maryland's first half play:
"I didn't think we had a defensive presence tonight. We're a much better defensive team than we showed tonight, but again, great players make great plays, and Crystal Langhorne and Shay Doron carried their team when they needed to. It seemed like they just made every play at the beginning of the game."
On Georgia Tech's youth:
"I didn't think that my team showed up tonight, but sometimes with a young team that happens. This was really the first away game of the year that we didn't show up to play in the first half. I have to take responsibility for that, especially with a team that has three freshmen in the starting lineup."
On team's strengths and weaknesses:
"I thought offensively we broke down from the very beginning. I don't think we were sure how we wanted to play. We're a much better team when we control the tempo, and we definitely didn't want to get into a running game with them, because that isn't something that we're particularly good at. We scored 67 points, which is kind of ironic because that's one of the most we've scored all year, but we gave up 84 which may be the most we've given up all year."
On Coach Brenda Fresse's 100th win:
"Brenda has done a tremendous job. From the time she started at Ball State as a head coach, through Minnesota, and then getting to Maryland, she's just done a tremendous job. I have nothing but respect for her work ethic, and her ability to recruit and bring in great players. She's just done a tremendous job, and she will only continue to build this program. I see nothing but a bright future for Maryland."
