The No. 25 Maryland women's basketball team's run in the ACC Tournament came to an end in the semifinal round, losing to sixth-ranked Duke, 74-44. The sixth-seeded Terps had reached the semifinal round for the second-straight year and closed out the tournament with a 21-9 record, the most wins since the 1992-93 season.
Maryland will have to wait until next Sunday, March 13 when the NCAA announces the Division I Championship bracket. The Terps are hosting the first and second rounds on March 20 and 22 at Comcast Center.
Senior Anesia Smith (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) led the Terps with 12 points, while freshman Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) added 11.
Maryland struggled offensively, shooting just 13.6 percent from the field in the first half. The Terps trailed just 10-8 with 9:24 remaining in the first half after Langhorne connected on a pair of free throws. The Blue Devils, however, proceeded to go on a 21-2 run to close out the half and take a 33-11 lead.
Despite its offensive struggles, the Terps never gave up. Maryland went on an 11-1 run to make it 48-26 with 8:46 remaining. Sophomore Shay Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) and Langhorne each contributed four points during that span.
The Terps hung in tough over the final nine minutes, putting pressure on the Blue Devils all over the court and trading baskets. Maryland came to within 55-33 with 7:30 left. Duke used free throws down the stretch to build its lead back up again and advance to the championship game, 74-44.
Langhorne ended the game with five rebounds, making her three-game total 37, the third-most in ACC Tournament history in three games.
