Season Wrap Up: Maryland Women's Hoops Records One of the Best Seasons in Recent History

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Just two years after posting only 10 wins, the Maryland women's basketball team, under the guidance of third year head coach Brenda Frese, has made vast improvements on the strength of two top-10 recruiting classes, including the No. 2-ranked class in the nation last year.

Spending 17 weeks in the Associated Press Top 25, the Terrapins won 22 games this season, the most since the 1992-93 season, while advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the first the Terps have made back-to-back tournament appearances since 1992 and 1993. Maryland also posted its highest scoring average in 12 years, and recorded its highest rebounding average and largest rebounding margin in 25 years.

Coming to College Park rated as the No. 1 post player in the nation, freshman Crystal Langhorne was tabbed the conference's Preseason Rookie of the Year. She lived up to that billing, garnering ACC Rookie of the Year awards at season's end, by a majority selection, receiving 64 of 74 votes. She became only the fourth player in school history to earn the award and the first since 1991. Sophomore Shay Doron also earned a distinction not held by a Terrapin in 11 years when she was tabbed first team All-ACC.

Numerous season and single-game records were broken throughout the season, while individuals also posted some of the top 10 performances in school history. One of the records to fall this season was the all-time, single-game women's basketball ACC attendance mark. On Feb. 13, 2005, 17,243 fans "Crammed Comcast" to watch the Terrapins take on Duke. The Terps now own the conference's top-three attendance records in ACC history.

Below is a glance at the Terps' accomplishments in 2004-05:

Team Notes:
• Terps shattered the all-time, single-season attendance record. A school-record 71,051 fans attended 17 home games, more than 32,000 the previous mark set last year. The Terps rank in the top 25 in the nation in average attendance.
• 17,243 fans watched Maryland play Duke on Feb. 13, 2005, setting the all-time, single-season ACC attendance record. Maryland holds the top-three attendance records in conference history.
• 72.8 points per game averaged this season is the highest since 1992-93.
• 42.4 rebounds per game this season is the highest since 1979-80.
• +6.8 rebounding margin is the largest since 1979-80.
• 22 wins are the most since 1992-93.
• Maryland finished with a .500 record in the ACC for the second-straight year, the first time since 1992-93 and 1993-94 the Terps have posted back-to-back non-losing seasons.
• The Terps earned NCAA Tournament berths in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1992 and 1993.
• Maryland won NCAA Tournament games in back-to-back years for the first time since 1989 and 1990.
• Maryland was one of eight sites for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Maryland/College Park hosted an NCAA Tournament games for the first time since 1993.
• Maryland's final RPI is 16, the highest in six years and only the second time above 40 during that time.
• Maryland made its second-straight ACC Tournament semifinal appearance.
• Maryland defeated three ranked teams in 2004-05, the most wins over top 25 teams since 2000-01.
• The Terps' thrilling upset-victory over then No. 5/4 North Carolina was the team's first win over a top-five opponent since 1992-93.
• Maryland was ranked in the Associated Press top 25 for 17-consecutive weeks and 16 weeks in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll, the longest since 1992-93.
• Maryland achieved its highest ranking since 1992-93, earning a No. 15 rating.
• Maryland started the youngest team in the ACC, making 127 starts by freshmen and sophomores. The next closest was Georgia Tech with 93 freshmen and sophomore starts.
• With Crystal Langhorne's selection to the ACC All-Freshman team, at least one Terp has been named to the rookie squad the last four seasons.
• Maryland was 20-0 when leading at the half, 20-3 when outshooting its opponent, 20-5 when outrebounding opponent.
• All 10 of Maryland's losses this season came to teams who played in the NCAA Tournament and were ranked at some point in the season.
• Of Maryland's 10 losses, nine were by 13 points or less; five were by 10 points or less. All four of Maryland's road losses were by 10 points or less, three were by less than five points (including a three-point loss to Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium; an overtime loss at Florida State; and a two-point loss at Virginia).
• Maryland tied the school record with 11 three pointers in the win at Clemson. Ashleigh Newman knocked down seven treys, one short of tying the school record, while Kalika France hit a career-high four three pointers to help combine for 11 on the afternoon.
• Maryland captured the program's 200th ACC victory with a 70-65 win at Miami.
• Maryland boasted five players who have reached the 20-point plateau in a game.
• Maryland snapped Duke's streak of 241 games of making at least a three pointer on Jan. 27 in Durham, N.C.
• Maryland celebrated the 30th anniversary of the first nationally televised women's basketball game on Jan. 26 which featured the Terps and Immaculata.

Individual Notes:
Shay Doron is the first Terrapin since 1993 and the ninth overall to be named Kodak Region II All-American.
Shay Doron's first team All-ACC selection is the first for a Terrapin in 11 years.
Crystal Langhorne is the fourth Terrapin in school history and the first since 1991 to be voted ACC Rookie of the Year. She was also the first Terp in school history to be selected Preseason Rookie of the Year (selection of preseason award winner began in 1991).
Crystal Langhorne is the first ACC freshman to average a double-double since 1993.
Crystal Langhorne was named a conference best and a school-record ACC Rookie of the Week five times.
Shay Doron tied the single-game school record with 39 points at Florida State.
Crystal Langhorne broke the single-game, freshman class scoring record with 33 vs. Northern Colorado.
Crystal Langhorne tied the single-season doubles record with 18, held by Vicky Bullett in 1987-88. Langhorne also led the ACC in that category and was sixth in the nation.
Shay Doron broke the single-season sophomore class scoring record with 562 points, the fifth-highest single-season total in school history.
Crystal Langhorne broke the single-season, freshman class scoring and rebounding records. Her 549 points are sixth-most in school history and 340 boards are second-most. She is also just the third person in school history to score at least 500 points and grab at least 300 rebounds.
Shay Doron broke the single-season free throw record for the second-conseuctive year with 145 makes. Her .797 free throw percentage is also among the top 10 shooting performances in school history. Her 281 career free throws are sixth-most in school history.
Anesia Smith had 214 assists on the season, more than her first three-year total combined. It is the third-best single-season total in school history. Her 416 career assists are fifth-most in school history.
Kalika France's .358 shooting percentage from three-point land this season is tied for 11th-best in school history.
Crystal Langhorne became only the eight player in school history to have a 20-rebound game, when she grabbed 22 at Miami, one shy of tying the school record. She is also the first since 1980 to post a 20-rebound, 20-point game (29 points). Langhorne was the only freshman in the country to post a 20-rebound, 20 rebound game this season and only the ninth freshman in the history of the NCAA to perform such a feat.
Crystal Langhorne tied the ACC Tournament two-game rebounding record after posting back-to-back 16-rebound games.
Shay Doron set the Comcast Center record with 37 points in the win over UNC.
Anesia Smith set the Comcast Center record with 14 assists vs. Marshall.
Crystal Langhorne set the Comcast Center record for rebounds with 19 vs. NC State.
Anesia Smith almost recorded the first triple-double in school history on two occasions. Vs. Georgia Tech on Feb. 3, she had eight points, a career-high 10 rebounds and 11 assists; vs. Wake Forest on Feb. 10, she had eight points, eight rebounds and 10 assists.
Shay Doron and Crystal Langhorne swept the ACC weekly honors on Jan. 10 (Player and Rookie of the Week). It is only the second time in school history two Terps have earned the conference weekly honors in the same week.
Laura Harper and Crystal Langhorne each recorded a double-double in the same game vs. St. Bonaventure. It was the first time two Terps posted double-doubles in the same game since Nov. 29, 2002 when Charmaine Carr and Angel Ross did so vs. Rider.
Jade Perry's game-tying shot with 0.8 seconds at Arizona, sending the game into overtime, was No. 2 on ESPN's Top 10 Plays of the Day on the evening of Jan. 29.
