BALTIMORE, Md. - The Maryland competitive cheer team captured the first place title at the season opener, the Charm City Championship held Dec. 5 at the Baltimore Convention Center. The squad also received high score of the day honors, earning 82 out of a possible 90 from the judges.
The team made this year's Broadway themed routine public and hit all oftheir stunts. "The energy was so great," said coach Lura Fleece. "They felt comfortable, even during warm ups. They found their internal strength and motivated each other."
As the squad took the floor the crowd erupted, adding momentum to the routine. Mimi Cuff, one of the team's star flyers, executed all of her difficult maneuvers while Jennifer Carr, team captain, took control as the team leader.
The Charm City Championship was a great jumping-off point as the team looked to the future. Fleece knows that the competitiveness will increase as the season progresses. She looks to focus on improving the routine's dance elements for next weekend's competition, East Coast Challenge, in Atlantic City, N.J.
