Daytona Beach, Fla. - The University of Maryland's competitive cheer team captured the innovative choreography award at the NCA College Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.. The routine used a medley of classic songs from Broadway musicals and the choreography reflected the overall theme of the music.

Coach Lura Fleece wanted to catch the attention of the judges with something that was different, as most teams choose a more current music and choreography. "It is important to do something to differentiate yourself from the other teams competing, especially when you are as young a team as we are," said Fleece.

All of the routine's elements reflected the Broadway theme. The dance section, choreographed by assistant coach Alexis Gilliam, combined technical dance skills with creative staging and formations that simulated a big show-tune company number. The stunting also drew on the theme with a stunted kick-line.

Catch the Terps' performance on Saturday, April 23 at 2 p.m. on CBS-TV.
