Hall of Famer Bob Ward Dies

April 30, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Bob Ward, a former offensive lineman at the University of Maryland who was a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, recently passed away.

Ward was the only Terrapin player ever to earn All-America honors as both an offensive and defensive position player. He was MVP of the 1949 Gator Bowl and earned Southern Conference Player of the Year honors as a senior.

During his four years, Maryland was a combined 32-7-1, winning the 1949 Gator Bowl over Missouri and the 1951 Sugar Bowl over Tennessee that completed perfect 10-0 season.

During his four-year career, Ward weighed only 165 pounds, but he was a first-team All-America middle guard on defense as a junior in 1950 and as an offensive guard as a senior in 1951.

Ward was inducted into the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame in 1980. He is one of eight Terrapins to have been inducted into that hall.

Services and internment will be held at the Arlington National Cemetery on May 31, 2005 at 9:30 a.m. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. at Covenant Life Church, 7501 Muncaster Mill Road, Gaithersburg, Md. For more information, email Kelly.Ward@USSS.dhs.gov.
