COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
After posting 22 wins and reaching the second round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament, the Maryland women's basketball team jumped back into the top 25, earning a No. 24 final ranking in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Terps end the season among the nation's top 25 for the first time since 1992-93.
Head coach Brenda Frese's Maryland Terrapins, which featured only four upperclassmen on the 12-player roster, spent 16 weeks in coaches' poll during the regular season, reaching as high as No. 17 three times. The Terps' debut in the poll was a No. 23 rating in the preseason rankings.
Maryland ended the season with a first-round NCAA Tournament victory over then-No. 21 Wisconsin-Green Bay, 65-55, then followed up with a strong performance against second-seeded Ohio State, falling by just 10 points, 75-65.
Earlier in the season, Maryland upset ACC Champion and Elite Eight participant North Carolina as the Terps went on to record its first win over a top-five opponent in 12 years. The Terrapins also registered another upset in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals, topping then-No. 21 NC State to advance to the semifinals for the second-consecutive year.
Four Maryland opponents finished in the top 10 to end the season. LSU (No. 3) and Ohio State (No. 9) are two non-conference foes to finish in the top 10, while No. 6 North Carolina and No. 8 Duke are also rated in the top 10 and are the only other ACC squads among the final top 25. Maryland opponents UW-Green Bay, NC State, Virginia, Florida State and Arizona each received votes.
