Competitive Cheer Season Outlook
Sept. 24, 2004
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland Competitive Cheer team is springing back into action for its second season. After an outstanding inaugural season in which the team won five regional titles and placed seventh at the National Cheerleading Association Championship, the Terps look to rise above everyone's expectations yet again this year.
The University of Maryland is the first Division I institution to fully fund a varsity Competitive Cheer team, and in its second season the program continues to grow. For the first time, Head Coach Lura Fleece was able to recruit talent and has brought an astonishing 23 new student-athletes to the team. The team will be defined this season by its numerous strong tumblers and overall rise in ability.
"I have so many young and talented athletes this season," said Fleece. "We are looking forward to competing with a very difficult and action-packed routine. Every student-athlete on this team has something to add and overall we have a very dynamic group. I am really excited".
Not only does the team have many new faces, but the Terrapins will be seen at new competitions as well. Last season, the team attended mostly regional competitions. However with so many strong new members, Fleece has decided to compete at higher caliber competitions such as the COA College Championships in February.
Look for the Terps at their first competition of the season, Dec. 5, in Baltimore at Spirit Unlimited's Charm City Championships.
