COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland played host to Miami in the 10th game overall and the 6th Atlantic Coast Conference game of the 2006 season. Maryland is now 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the ACC. Prior to Wake Forest's game tonight at Florida State, the Terrapins move into first place of in the Atlantic Division.
The Terrapins are now 5-0 at home this season, and have a four-game winning streak.
Saturday's game was the 15th meeting between Maryland and Miami. The Terps now lead the all-time series, 8-7. It was just the second meeting in College Park, as the Terps posted an 18-17 win in 1982.
Maryland's 65-yard touchdown pass from Sam Hollenbach to Darrius Heyward-Bey with 11:45 left in the first quarter was the team's longest play of the season. That was until that duo hooked up again in the second quarter on a school-record 96-yard TD strike. The previous record was 92 yards (Stan Levine to Ed Bolton vs. Couth Carolina, 1949). Today's pass play matches the longest in Division I-A this season (Chase Holbrook to Chris Williams, New Mexico State vs. Idaho, Oct. 7) and is the second-longest play overall (98-yard run by Terry Caulley, Connecticut/vs. Army, Oct. 14).
The Terrapins ran just 37 offensive plays. Their previous season low was 50 vs. Middle Tennessee. The Hurricanes ran 73 plays and held a 37:09 to 22:51 advantage in time of possession.
The last time the Terrapins scored a touchdown on a game-opening drive was against Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 9, 2006. They are 6-0 this season when scoring first this season.
Heyward-Bey racked up his second career 100-yard game today. He had five catches for 175 yards against the Hurricanes.
With 41 rushing yards today, Lance Ball surpased the 1,500-yard plateau for his career. He has 1,534 career rushing yards, and needs 11 more to move past Chet Hanulak (1951-1953) into 16th place on the school's career rushing yards list.
Josh Allen rushed for 13 yards on three carries against Miami. Allen needs 54 rushing yards to become the ninth back in school history to reach 2,000 in his career.
Adam Podlesh moved into second-place on the school's career punting yards list, passing Brooks Barnard (1999-2002/8,646). He had eight punts for 332 yards and now has 8,978 in his career.
Sam Hollenbach threw for 202 yards, his second-straight 200-yard game and third of the season. He has connected on 34 of 40 passes for 449 yards over his last two games.
Linebackers Erin Henderson (13) and Wesley Jefferson (14) each reached double digits in tackles. For Henderson it was his fifth-straight game in twin figures, while Jefferson had 10 or more stops for the fourth time this season.
Josh Wilson had five pass breakups in the game, including one midway through the fourth quarter on a pass intended for which stopped a potential scoring drive for Miami.
