Men's Tennis Heads To ACC Tournament This Weekend

April 19, 2006
The Maryland Men's Tennis Team will begin competition in the ACC Tournament starting April 20 in Cary, N.C. The Terps will enter the ACC Tournament as a No. 11 seed. Their first match will be played on Thursday, April 20 against 6th-seeded Wake Forest (No. 27 in the nation). Maryland lost to Wake Forest on April 1, 5-2.
At an overall 9-11, 1-10 in the ACC, Maryland has experienced one of their best season in years. On February 26, after defeating William and Mary, 4-3, the Terps became ranked for the first time in 17 years. Maryland stayed at the No. 75 ranking until March 7, at which point a 6-1 victory against George Washington moved the Terps to No. 67, their highest ranking of the season.
No. 115 freshman Nickolai Nielsen has proved to be one of the Terps most valuable players. He is entering the post season with a 12-8 record in singles matches and a 10-9 record in doubles. As the only ranked player on the team, Nielsen has won many matches against ACC opponents.
Junior Scott Fink has also confirmed his tennis talents, ending the season with a 13-7 record in singles matches and a 10-7 record in doubles. Fink's two biggest wins came last weekend on the road against No. 26 Georgia Tech and No. 24 Clemson. Maryland lost both matches, 6-1, with Fink grasping the only win for the Terps two days in a row.
If the Terps advance, they will look to face 3rd-seeded Miami, ranked 10th in the latest FILA rankings.
