Terps Win, Earn High Score of Entire Reach the Beach Competition

April 3, 2006

Maryland Competitive Cheer not only won its 11th consecutive competition of the season Sunday, but also earned the highest score of the two-day event. The coaching staff believes it was the last little bit of motivation the women needed before NCA College Nationals.

Assistant Coach Jarnell Bonds said the competition was "the best performance of the year." Head Coach Lura Fleece agreed, confessing that she cried on Saturday after the performance. "I was just so moved. They were absolutely amazing...they truly brought down the house."

The Saturday performance showcased perfect skills all-around. Even more impressive was the incredible energy level the women possessed throughout. Fleece said everyone in the crowd became a Maryland fan after seeing the performance. "Little girls were asking our girls for autographs afterwards. It was so funny." Coach Bonds saw other fans run up and touch the stage immediately afterwards, pretending to burn themselves from the heat the women left on the floor.

Coach Fleece is hoping the team can "bottle their energy" and "have it on hand again" on both Thursday and Friday for pre-lims and finals, respectively. She believes the team is in prime position, both mentally and physically, to compete for the National Title this coming weekend.

The Terps scored an average of 288 points out of a possible 300.
