Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"I'll tell you it was a lot of fun today. We wanted to make a statement and it started with our defense and the intensity that we started the game with. I feel like we got after it in so many dimensions of the game and were able to make an impact. We love playing in Comcast with a huge crowd and you really couldn't ask for a better situation with this team."
On Kristi Toliver:
"Her three pointers to start the game were huge. I don't know if there's another guard in the country that shoots the ball as well as Kristi does. When she can knock down shots like that, defenses really have to extend out on our guards and that allows for our post players to go one on one and get active."
On Crystal Langhorne:
"I'm not surprised with anything that Crystal does, she takes high percentage shots and it's always in the flow of the game. With her quickness and ability to counter inside in the post game, she is such a spark on this team. She continues to separate herself and show what a special player she is."
On next week's game against Miami:
"The greatest thing about coaching this team is that we respect every opponent that we play. We know Miami is going to be a really tough opponent; going down to their place, especially given that it's our first road game in the ACC. Our focus right now is 100% about playing for forty minutes against Miami."
Maryland Guard Kristi Toliver
On game:
"I think it was a big statement game for us. We came out with a lot of energy and played great on both ends of the floor. We think we are a fun team to watch and that's the message that we wanted to get out to everybody, we are a talented team, we are fun to watch and we couldn't be happier with the way we played today."
On the ACC:
"We want to represent the ACC and show its dominance. In our opinion the ACC is the number one conference in the country and we just tried to show that today by our play."
Maryland Center Crystal Langhorne
On Michigan State Center Allyssa DeHaan:
"I've never played against a player that big before, it was tough. Coach said she's going to block some shots but to keep going after it, so that's just what I did."
On playing on national television:
"I think that we were just excited to come out and play on national television for the first time. We wanted to come out and play well because everybody judges a team by the first time they see them play, so we just wanted to stay focused, come out and play hard."
Michigan State University Head Coach Joanne McCallie
On today's game:
"Maryland plays great, terrific basketball. Nothing they did surprised us; they just played very, very well. They play well together and they are extremely well coached. Even with all of their talented guards on the perimeter, they distributed the ball well."
On Kristi Toliver:
"Kristi Toliver was the key to the game, like she has been before. Her shots in the first half were significant and allowed them to broaden their lead."
On Crystal Langhorne:
"Crystal Langhorne is tremendous and she gave them an edge. She is a fantastic player who plays very hard. Without question, she performs night in and night out. She is consistent and that's a critical part to being one of those great players."
On Maryland's rebounding:
"Maryland is a very good rebounding team and you're not going to outrebound them without being purposeful. The game should have been much better and I'm sure Maryland was expecting some measure of competition. You have to fight hard to rebound against a strong team."
On Jade Perry:
"I think Jade Perry did a nice job for them. She is a really nice player to put in after some of the others because she has a body and she's not afraid to hit with that body."
Michigan State University Guard Victoria Lucas-Perry
On comparing Maryland's team to last year:
"Everyone is a different team every year. They have a lot of returning players. We're a different team so it's hard to compare us, but they are definitely good and they showed it tonight."
On Maryland's play tonight:
"Maryland runs the ball really well and they move the ball well to find players. They do a great job of running the ball and pushing the ball in. They rebound and defend well too."
