Emerald Bowl Post Game Notes
Terps in bowl games: With the 21-14 loss to Oregon State, Maryland's bowl record now stands at 9-11-2. The Terps had their three-game bowl winning streak snapped, as the Beavers handed Maryland its first bowl loss since the 2002 Orange Bowl. Maryland is now 3-2 in bowl games under Coach Ralph Friedgen.
Turtles are quick starters: After winning the first quarter 14-7, Maryland outscored its opponents 94-47 in the opening quarter of games this season. Oregon State had entered the Emerald Bowl having outscored its opponents 127-16 in the first quarter of games this year.
Heyward-Bey goes long: Darrius Heyward-Bey's 63-yard reception was the Terps' third longest play of the season. Chris Turner's 78-yard pass to Jason Goode against Georgia Tech was the Terps' longest and Turner hooked up with wide receiver Isaiah Williams for a 66-yarder against Florida State.
The 63-yard catch was Heyward-Bey's 12th reception this season of more than 20 yards. He also had rushes of 37 and 54 yards.
Heyward-Bey continues to climb in the Maryland record books. He now has 1,480 receiving yards for his career, good for ninth on the school's all-time list. His 51 receptions this year rank 10th on the single-season list, and his 786 yards rank eighth.
Terps sack Beavers: Maryland set a new season high with five sacks against Oregon State. The Terps previous season-high was four sacks, which they recorded twice this season in wins over Villanova and Boston College.
Trey Covington tied a career high with two sacks for a loss of seven yards. He previously had that many as a freshman in 2005 against Virginia.
Moten, a freshman force: Redshirt freshman linebacker Adrian Moten had a great bowl debut for the Terps with five tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. He now has 5.5 sacks on the year, with all of them coming in the team's last five games. He has 50 tackles and three forced fumbles on the season, and was named to the 2007 Sporting News ACC All-Freshman Team.
Henderson in double figures again: Linebacker Erin Henderson totaled 11 tackles, the 16th time he reached double digits in tackles in his career. He led the Terps with 122 tackles this season, and his 11.09 tackles per game led the ACC entering bowl action.
Starting streaks continue: Several Terps extended starting streaks in the game. Safety Christian Varner has started a team-high 35 straight games and 36 of the past 37 games. Linebacker Trey Covington has started 34 of the past 35 games. Varner, along with guard Andrew Crummey have started a team-high 36 games overall.
