Trailing 62-61 late, junior Kristi Toliver gave the Terps back the lead and they never looked back. Toliver hit a 3-poiner with 4:17 left and followed it with a defensive rebound and jumper in the lane to put the Terps up four. Toliver scored nine points in the final 4:17 of the game.
With the win, Maryland becomes the first team in the country with 11 victories.
For the 12th consecutive game, three Terrapins scored in double figures with Toliver notching 19, Laura Harper had 16 and Crystal Langhorne contributed 14.
The Terps' victory against Middle Tennessee State was their second in as many years, winning at Middle Tennesse State last year, 80-76. Those two games are the only matchups in the all-time series.
The five-point victory was Maryland's closest home win of the season and the only single-digit win. LSU's 13-point loss is the second closest.
Senior frontcourt players Crystal Langhorne and Laura Harper combined to score the Terps' first 14 points of the game, with Langhorne scoring eight of the 14.
Maryland senior Ashleigh Newman played against her former high-school coach and current Middle Tennessee State head coach Rick Insell, who coached Newman at Shelbyville Central in Shelbyville, Tenn. Newman won three state titles with Insell.
Ashleigh Newman extended her consecutive games streak to 116 and is now tied with Shay Doron (2004-07) for fourth on the list.
The Terps have only played three games all-time against teams currently in the Sun Belt Conference, including the two against Middle Tennessee State. The Terps lost to Western Kentucky in 1992 in the other game.
