COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Krista Pellizzi recorded five goals and three assists to lead the No. 8 Maryland women's lacrosse team to an 18-8 win against Boston College on February 24 at the Lacrosse & Field Hockey Complex. Her numbers for goals, assists, and points all matched her previous career highs.
This is the third time in her career that Pellizzi has scored five goals and the fifth time she has dished out three assists. It also the third time she has recorded eight points.
Senior Katie Doolittle added four goals for the Terps while juniors Kelly Kasper and Casey Magor both had two goals and an assist. Freshman Caitlyn McFadden recorded a goal and two assists while picking up three ground balls and causing four turnovers. Junior goalie Allie Buote stopped 10 shots for the second-straight game.
Boston College started the game off quickly as it won the opening draw and went down the field to score immediately. Elizabeth Kadison secured the first draw and found the back of the net just 41 seconds into the game. Maryland responded with a four goal run that gave the Terps a lead it would never relinquish.
The Terrapin scoring began when BC turned the ball over on their offensive end. Kasper then found Pellizzi who scored her first goal of the day 37 seconds after the Eagles' tally. BC got the ensuing draw and had two chances to score, but Buote notched a save and Margot Spatola hit the pipe. Junior Katie Pumphrey forced a turnover and set up Pellizzi on the offensive end. Pellizzi found Kasper who got one past the BC goalie to make it 2-1.
The Terps scored their next two goals in the span of eight seconds. The first came with Pellizzi's unassisted tally at 22:39. Junior Dana Dobbie got the following draw and McFadden set up Magor for the 4-1 advantage.
Kadison had a part in BC's next goal as well as she assisted Jenna McCabe at the 19:01 mark in the first half to cut the deficit to 4-2. From that point on, Maryland controlled the rest of the half as it scored six of the last eight goals to take a 10-4 lead into the break. Doolittle scored three of her goals in the final 19 minutes of the first half.
Pellizzi scored three goals in the first 12:21 of the second frame to help increase Maryland's advantage to 15-5 with 17:39 left in the game. The Terps scored the next two goals, both unassisted, as Kasper and Doolittle found the back of the cage to give Maryland its largest lead of the day at 17-5 with eight minutes left.
McCabe converted a couple of free-position shots in the waning minutes and Lauren Costello added the third-consecutive goal for BC with 49 seconds left to make it 17-8. Sophomore Kearny Raver closed out the game when she scored her first-career goal with 27 seconds left to push the lead back to 10, 18-8.
For the Eagles (0-1, 0-1 ACC), McCabe recorded three goals while Kadison had two and an assist. Emily Hannigan added a pair of goals and Katie Monaghan saved 14 shots in 39 minutes of action in goal.
Maryland (2-0, 1-0 ACC) is back in action next Saturday, March 3 when it takes on No. 2 Duke at noon at Ludwig Field.
