COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The sixth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was selected the No. 2 seed in the Dayton Regional, the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee announced on Monday night. The reigning national champions are making their fourth-straight NCAA Tournament berth under fifth-year head coach Brenda Frese.
The Terps travel to Hartford, Conn., to face 15th-seeded Harvard, who captured the Ivy League's automatic bid, on Sunday, March 18 at the Hartford Civic Center. It will be the first-ever meeting in the postseason between the teams and just the second meeting overall. The teams only other meeting was in 1997.
If Maryland advances to the second round, it could face one of two of familiar foes as No. 7-seed Mississippi and 10th-seeded TCU square off in the first round. The Terps beat both teams in November by an average margin of victory of 24.5 ppg.
Maryland is making its 16th NCAA Tournament appearance and 21st national tournament appearance (four AIAW appearances, one WNIT appearance). The Terrapins won the NCAA title last season as the No. 2 seed, defeating top-seeded Duke, 78-75, in overtime. They overcame a 13-point deficit, tying for the second-largest comeback in NCAA Championship game history.
The Lady Frogs and Ole Miss play at noon, with the Terrapins and Crimson squaring off 30 minutes after the conclusion of that game or at approximately 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPN and ESPNU.
