The No. 47-ranked Maryland men's tennis team won its third straight home match today against the UMBC Retrievers at the Tennis Center at College Park. The Terps defeated the Retrievers, 5-2.
After losing all three doubles contests, Maryland came back to win all but one singles match, improving the Terps to 9-2 on the 2007 season.
The Retrievers (4-3, 2-0 America East Conference), clinched the doubles point at the No. 1 position when Maryland's David Kwon and Boris Fetbroyt fell to Fredi Voorman and Nick Savage-Pollock, 9-8(8-5).
With the Terps ahead 3-1, Andrew Orban secured the victory for Maryland at No. 3 singles, defeating UMBC's David Jackson, 6-3, 6-4. Jackson paired with Irfan Shamasdin at No. 2 doubles to win over Orban and Nicolas Frayssinoux, 9-8(8-4).
Kwon defeated Shamasdin 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, while Maryland team co-captain Nickolai Nielsen overcame Voorman, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. Nielsen paired with Louis-Xavier Lavallee at No. 3 doubles and fell to Fernando Ferreira and Chris Meyer, 9-8(8-5).
With a five-match homestand completed, the Terps, who are 1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, will hit the road to play in three ACC matches. Maryland's first stop is Boston College. The Terps and Eagles will face off at noon Monday, March 19. Maryland will then travel to No. 31 Florida State on Thursday, March 22 and No. 73 Miami on Saturday, March 24.
