NCAA Second Round Features Rematch with Ole Miss
The second-seeded Terrapins move on to the second round for the fourth-straight year. While playing in the round of 32 has become familiar territory, their opponent is also a familiar one. Maryland faces seventh-seeded Mississippi, a team which the Terps defeated, 110-79, earlier in the season in November.
The 2007 seniors have reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament all four years, the only class in school history to do so. The class of 1981, 1982 and 1983 all advanced in four-straight postseason tournaments, but at least two of the years were in the AIAW Tournament.
Maryland is looking to reach the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year, which would be a first since 1988-1989.
Crystal Langhorne is six points away from 500 on the season. She is looking to become the first player in school history with three 500-point seasons.
With the win over the Crimson in the first round, the Terps have won 31-straight games against non-conference teams, the third-longest active streak in the nation.
Every game of the NCAA Tournament will be televised on ESPN or ESPN2 and ESPNU. The Terrapins' first-round game will be on ESPN.
Last Time Out
Maryland shot better than 50 percent from the floor and used an improved defense to defeat Harvard, 89-65, to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-consecutive year. Senior Shay Doron poured in 21 points to lead the Terrapins to victory.
The Terps used to 19-6 run after the game was tied at 9-9 to build a double-digit lead. The Crimson, who were the only No. 16 seed in NCAA men's or women's tournament history to beat a No. 1 seed in 1998, cut the lead back down to single digits, before Maryland put together a 10-4 run to close out the half, 38-25.
Maryland's 15 steals in the game were one fewer than its season high set at Loyola in early December. The Terrapins outrebounded the Crimson, 42-32.
Both Crystal Langhorne and Marissa Coleman nearly had double-doubles in the game. Each grabbed nine rebounds, with Langhorne scoring 12 points and Coleman chipping in 10. Kristi Toliver talled 13 points off the bench, while also fell one assist short of a double-double.
The Terps' 14 turnovers were the fewest since committing 14 vs. Wake Forest on Jan. 21. Its 23 assists were the most since handing out 27 against Michigan State on Jan. 6.
Langhorne Headed for Another School Record
Crystal Langhorne needs just six points for 500 on the season, which would make her the first player in school history with three-straight 500-point seasons.
Langhorne is already one of two players in the history of the program with two-500 point seasons. Only Shay Doron and former Terp Terrapin Vicky Bullett have accomplished such a feat.
Langhorne Nearing Two Milestones
Aside from being within reach of 500 points, which would make her the first player in school history with three 500-point seasons, Crystal Langhorne is also within reach of two more milestones.
Langhorne needs just five rebounds to tie for second on Maryland's all-time list. She currently has 931 for her career. She also needs just three points for her 1,700th in her career.
Out of Conference Domination
Maryland has won 31-straight games against non-conference opponents, the third-longest non-conference streak in the nation.
Both North Carolina and Duke claim the longest non-conference win streak at 33 games.
The Terps' last loss to a non-conference team was an 80-75 decision to then-No. 1 ranked Tennessee, 80-75, on Nov. 26, 2005 in the championship game of the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.
Coming Up
The winners of the NCAA Tournament second round games move on to the Sweet Sixteen. Maryland and Ole Miss are battling to advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the Dayton Regional, which will be played on Sunday, March 25. The winner of this game will go on to face the winner of the second-round matchup between Marquette and Oklahoma.
