Future Terps Play in HS Girls All-Star Games

March 23, 2007

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Future Terrapins Drey Mingo and Marah Strickland were selected McDonald's and WBCA High School All-Americans. Both will play in upcoming all-star games. The McDonald's game will be on March 28 in Louisville, Ky., while the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) will present its game on March 31 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Mingo and Strickland signed National Letters of Intent to play for the University of Maryland in November. Mingo was recently named the Atlanta Journal Constitution's Northside Player of the Year for the second-straight year. A 6-2 post player, she led Marist High School to a 28-6 record and the Class AAAA championship game. Mingo averaged 19.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. Last summer, she was invited to the Under-18 USA Basketball team camp.

Strickland garnered All-Metro High School Player of the Year honors from the Baltimore Sun for the second-consecutive year. She averaged over 22 points, five rebounds and four assists per game as a senior, leading Towson Catholic to the Maryland A Conference State semifinals. A 5-11 guard, she finished her career with over 2,000 points. Strickland is the younger sister of former Terrapin Marché, who was a Terp from 1999-2002. Marah was a USA Today sophomore and junior All-American.

Mingo and Strickland follow in the footsteps of a number of Terrapins who played in the McDonald's and WBCA games. Current Terps Crystal Langhorne, Laura Harper, Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood, Kristi Toliver and Marissa Coleman each played in both games their senior year in high school. Shay Doron, who finished her career at College Park after Maryland's second-round NCAA Tournament appearance, was the first girls player from New York to be named a McDonald's All-American.

Mingo and Strickland are two of five players who signed National Letters of Intent to play at Maryland beginning the 2007-08 season. The two will be joined by Anjale Barrett from New York, Katheryn Lyons from Kernersville, N.C., and Kim Rodgers from Virginia Beach, Va.

The McDonald's game will be played at Freedom Hall and tips off at 5:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU. The WBCA game will be played at Cleveland State University's Woodling Gym and is scheduled to tip off at 4:30 p.m.
