COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland's associate head coach Jeff Walz has been named head coach of the University of Louisville women's basketball team, the school announced today. Walz was on Brenda Frese's coaching staff for six seasons, including five in College Park.
"I'm ecstatic for Jeff and his family. Obviously, I think Louisville has made an excellent choice and Cardinal fans will reap the rewards," said Frese. "Jeff has a tremendous mind for the game and a great work ethic. He is a very good teacher and knows how to express things in a way the players will understand.
"He's been with me for six years, first at Minnesota and then here at Maryland," continued Frese. "As a staff, we've had an incredible experience and have learned so much together. He's a huge reason for our success. He really was a person I could count on in virtually any situation and what was especially comforting was that I had a high level of trust with him. He's deserving of and ready for this opportunity."
Walz was elevated to associate head coach after he helped Frese lead the Terrapins to their first-ever national championship in 2006. During his tenure, the Terps reached the NCAA Tournament four-straight years, winning at least 18 games in the last four years, including a school-record 34 wins in 2006.
Walz is a native of Fort Thomas, Ky., and a 1995 graduate of Northern Kentucky. He came to Maryland with Frese from Minnesota and has made stops at Nebraska and Western Kentucky over his 12-year coaching career. He and his wife, Kim, have an daughter, Kaeley, and son, Jacob.
