COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Seven players scored multiple goals as the No. 8 women's lacrosse team upended No. 2 Duke, 19-18, on March 3 at Ludwig Field. The Terrapins ended the Blue Devils' 12-game road winning streak that dated back to 2005. Leading the scoring were senior Krista Pellizzi and junior Lauren Cohen who both recorded four goals, which was a career high for Cohen.
Cohen also matched her career high with two assists to establish a new personal best with six points. Junior Dana Dobbie added a hat trick while securing a game-high eight draw controls. Classmate Kelly Kasper had two goals and an assist for the second straight game while adding four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Junior Casey Magor and Katie Princiotto notched two goals and an assist apiece while freshman Caitlyn McFadden posted two tallies.
It was the first win for the Terps against the Blue Devils since 2003, a 9-8 overtime triumph in College Park, and it stopped a four-game skid against their ACC rival.
Maryland opened the game up quickly as it took an early 4-0 lead four minutes in. Five different student-athletes picked up points as each goal was scored by a different Terp.
Duke responded with a three-goal run of its own to cut the deficit to one with 17:12 left in the half. The high-powered combination of Caroline Cryer and Kristen Waagbo started the Blue Devils' run as Cryer notched the goal off of a dish from Waagbo. Leigh Jester and Allie Johnson followed suit with unassisted goals to make it 4-3.
Kasper and Princiotto, who both scored on the game-opening streak, added one more goal each to make it 6-3 midway through the first. The Terps kept the three-goal cushion as it was 8-5 with just over eight minutes left in the half, but Duke closed the gap prior to the break.
Lindsay Gilbride scored with 3:10 left and then Cryer set up Waagbo this time with a minute and a half left to make it 8-7 heading into the locker rooms.
The two teams traded goals for most of the second half but the Terps opened the game up when they went on a 4-0 run to push the lead to 17-12 with just nine minutes remaining in the game. Magor and Cohen notched goals while Dobbie posted two during the run.
Duke wasn't done, however, as it stormed back to score five unanswered goals in just over three minutes to tie the game for the first time, 17-17, with 5:12 left.
Pellizzi notched her final goal of the game at the 3:02 mark and then Cohen came up with the eventual game-winner with just 47 seconds left to give the Terps a two-goal edge. Kasper set up Cohen's goal and got the assist.
Carolyn Davis scored 20 seconds later to cut the lead to one again and Duke got the ensuing draw but was unable to convert it as Maryland hung on for its third win.
For the Blue Devils (4-1, 0-1 ACC), Waagbo recorded a game-high five goals and added an assist. Davis notched four goals while Cryer had three and an assist. Goalie Kim Imbesi was credited with 13 saves.
Maryland (3-0, 2-0 ACC) returns to action on Wednesday, March 7 when it takes on No. 13 Richmond on the road at 3:00 p.m.
