April 15, 2007
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins men's tennis team closed out the spring 2007 regular season earlier today at the Tennis Center at College Park with a 6-1 loss to No. 28-ranked Clemson. Maryland ended with an overall record of 10-10 and an Atlantic Coast Conference record of 2-9.
Clemson (28-8, 6-5 ACC) began the day by winning at No. 3 doubles. Rok Bizjak and Carlos Alvarez defeated Maryland's Trey Taylor and Michael Coleman, 8-3.
At the No. 2 spot, Nicolas Frayssinoux and Scott Fink downed Jarmaine Jenkins and Kevin Fleck 9-8 (8-1). Despite Maryland's win, Clemson had already picked up the doubles point at the No. 1 position when No. 39-ranked Clement Reix and Ryan Young overcame Andrew Orban and Boris Fetbroyt, 8-6.
With Clemson ahead 1-0, Maryland head coach Jim Laitta pulled the Terrapins and their fans together to pay recognition to seniors Fink and John O'Rourke, who led the Terps with poise and leadership for their time at Maryland.
"They both come from great families," Laitta said. "They're both graduating with at least a 3.0 grade point average, and that is a tough thing for any college athlete to do. They're great kids and are going to go on to do great things."
In singles competition, Maryland's only point came at the No. 1 position when Frayssinoux defeated Jenkins 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
The Terrapins will travel to Cary, N.C. to compete in the ACC tournament on Thursday. Times and matches will be announced later in the week.
