Wilson Chosen By Seattle in Second Round of NFL Draft

April 28, 2007

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former University of Maryland cornerback Josh Wilson was chosen with the 23rd pick in the second round (55th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks.

Wilson was the sixth cornerback taken in Saturday's draft. Maryland has now had at least one player taken in the first or second round of each of the last five drafts. Wilson is the first Terp ever drafted by Seattle.

Wilson is also the highest drafted cornerback in school history. Domonique Foxworth was chosen in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos.

A two-year starter and four-year letterwinner, Wilson played in 46 of 48 career games, including 28 starts.

Last season, the 5-foot-9, 187-pounder earned honorable mention All-America honors from Pro Football Weekly, as well as securing honorable mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference accolades.

Wilson tallied 157 career tackles, including 100 solo stops. He also had two career interceptions, 25 passes defended, two forced fumbles, two recovered fumbles and three blocked kicks.

The versatile Wilson was one of the top kick returners in the nation last season. He ranked 11th nationally in kickoff returns (27.3 ypr) and set the single-season school record for return yards (847). That mark was the sixth-highest single-season total in ACC history.

Wilson was also a standout in the classroom. He was an Academic All-ACC selection the last two seasons and captured the 2006 James Tatum Award, as the top student-athlete among football players in the league.

Wilson has pro football in his genes. His late father, Tim, was a third-round choice of the Houston Oilers in the 1977 NFL Draft following three seasons (1974-76) as a Maryland running back. He was the primary blocking back for Earl Campbell, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
