WNBA's New York Liberty Select Doron in Draft

April 4, 2007

CLEVELAND - Brenda's Frese's first Maryland recruit five years ago, Shay Doron was selected by the New York Liberty in the WNBA Draft Wednesday afternoon in Cleveland. She becomes the first WNBA draft pick out of the University of Maryland since 2002.

Shay Doron (Ramat Hasharon, Israel/Christ the King [N.Y.]) was the third pick in the second round and the 16th overall. She is the sixth Terrapin in the history of the program to be selected in the draft and the second to be selected by the Liberty. Deedee Warley was selected in the fourth round with the 62nd overall pick by N.Y. in 2002, while Marché Strickland was the last Terp to be drafted. She followed Warley and was picked by the Cleveland Rockers.

Doron returns to her "other" hometown of New York City where she attended Christ the King High School in Queens, N.Y., her final two prep seasons. She was the first girls basketball player out of the state of New York to be named McDonald's All-American in 2003. She is a two-time New York Gatorade Player of the Year, leading Christ the King to the 2002 New York State Federation finals and the Diocesan crown. As a senior, she led the school to a No. 1 national ranking, as well.

Completing her collegiate career in College Park by helping the Terps to four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, Doron was a key factor in Maryland's return to national prominence, helping it to the program's first national title in 2006. Her name can be spotted all over the record books, finishing second all-time in scoring with 1,878 points. She has broken several school records, including the free throw mark, making 492 in her four seasons, attempting 613, also a school record. She fell just shy of the free throw percentage mark, posting the second-best percentage in school history at 80.3. Doron also ranked in the top 10 in school history in field goal attempts, assists, steals, three-pointers made and three-pointers attempted.

In her first-collegiate game in College Park, Doron tied the NCAA record with 23 free throws made. She also tied the school record with 39 points scored, a feat she accomplished in her sophomore season. No other player has appeared in more games as a Terrapin than Doron, playing in 134 contests, starting in a team-record 119.

Doron is a three-time All-ACC honoree, earning first team honors as a sophomore. That season, she was also a Kodak/WNBA Honorable Mention All-American. In 2003-04, she became the first freshman in school history to garner all-conference nods, when she was voted to the third team. Doron has also excelled in the classroom and was named an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American for the second time this year.

Doron was one of 51 collegiate invitees at the WNBA's pre-draft camp from March 30-31 in Cleveland. Because of her performance at the two-day event where she impressed coaches and general managers from all 13 teams, she was on the short list of invited guests to the WNBA Draft held at the Renaissance Hotel in Cleveland, as well.

The WNBA Training Camp begins April 22, followed by the preseason on April 28. The league tips off its 11th season on Saturday, May 5. For more information on the New York Liberty, logo onto www.wnba.com/liberty.
