The No. 55 Maryland men's tennis team wrapped up its conference play this weekend on the road with a 6-1 loss to the No. 5-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels at noon today at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Terrapins are now 10-8 for the spring season and 2-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference competition.
The Tar Heels, unbeaten with a record of 20-0, began the affair with a win at No. 3 doubles when Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney downed Maryland's Trey Taylor and Nickolai Nielsen, 8-2.
The Terrapins battled at No. 1 doubles and came out with a win, tieing the two teams for the doubles point. Andrew Orban and Boris Fetbroyt defeated Lenny Gullan and David Stone, 8-5. North Carolina commanded the No. 2 doubles position to clinch the point when Stefan Hardy and Sebastian Guejman defeated Scott Fink and Nicolas Frayssinoux, 8-4.
Fink secured Maryland's solo point with a win by retirement at No. 4 singles after leading Guejman 6-3, 3-0.
Fogleman picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Maryland's Aaron Carr at No. 5, while Hardy won 6-4, 6-1 over Nielsen.
With the Tar Heels leading 3-1, No. 121-ranked Kearney overcame Orban, 7-5, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot to clinch North Carolina's twentieth win and put them to 8-0 in ACC play.
No. 63 Benjamin Carlotti faced a touch battle against Frayssinoux at the No. 1 position, but Carlotti picked up the win, 6-0, 7-6 (7-2).
The Terrapins will return to the Tennis Center at College Park for two home matches this weekend against ranked conference opponents. Maryland will face off against the No. 48 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at 3:00 p.m. Friday and the No. 28 Clemson Tigers at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
