UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Junior goalie Allie Buote and the Maryland defense held No. 11 Penn State scoreless for the first 17:01 of the second half to build a 9-6 lead as the No. 3 Terrapins defeated the Nittany Lions Sunday, 10-9, at Holuba Hall in the final game of the ACC/ALC Challenge. The Nittany Lions came back to tie the game, but with just over a minute remaining, junior Dana Dobbie scored the game-winning goal to lift the Terps to victory.
Dobbie led the team with two goals and an assist, while freshman Caitlyn McFadden notched a goal and a pair of assists. Senior Katie Doolittle added a goal and two assists, including on Dobbie's game-winner. Classmate Krista Pellizzi poured in two goals. Buote was spectacular in the cage, recording 12 saves.
Maryland jumped out to an early 3-1 lead on the strength of its transition offense. Junior Katie Princiotto scored the game's first goal on a fast break after classmate Katie Pumphrey caused a turnover and scooped up the ground ball to start the break. The Terps scored two minutes later, as the Nittany Lions' turned the ball over and junior Casey Magor scored, with McFadden setting up both of the early goals.
Karen Long scored for Penn State to close the gap to one, but the Terps quickly responded when Princiotto found Dobbie from behind the cage with 22:03 remaining in the first half.
Penn State stormed back with three unanswered goals in a 4:06 span to take its first lead of the day, 4-3. Jessie Lieb scored once and tallied an assist during that stretch.
Maryland added two goals off the sticks of junior Kelly Kasper and McFadden to regain the lead, 5-4, with 5:42 left in the opening period.
Prior to the end of the half, PSU responded with two goals to retake the advantage, 6-5. Theresa Bucci and Lindsay Dutch scored for the Nittany Lions, while Lieb dished out another assist.
Pumphrey and the Maryland defense jumpstarted the Terps in the second half, as they began the period with four unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead. The Severna Park native caused two turnovers that led to the first two Maryland goals, both scored by Pellizzi. The Terps tacked on two more goals from Doolittle and junior Lauren Cohen, while the Penn State offense was held scoreless for the first 17:01 of the second half.
The Nittany Lions rallied, however, knotting the game at 9-9 with 6:56 to go in the game. Dutch scored first in the run. Kerry Shea and Lieb then converted on free positions to tie the game.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the closing minutes, but Maryland converted the final goal when Doolittle found Dobbie in front of the cage with 61 seconds left on the clock.
Penn State (8-4) was led by Lieb, who recorded two goals and three helpers while Dutch and Bucci each scored twice. Cammie Jurkowsky was credited with 11 saves in the losing effort.
Maryland (12-1) returns home on Friday, April 13, to take on Loyola College. First draw against the Greyhounds is set for 7 p.m. from Ludwig Field.
